يا ضَيفَ موسى أَخى خُزَيمَةَ صُم

يا ضَيفَ موسى أَخى خُزَيمَةَ صُم

أَو فَتَحامَ إِن كُنتَ لَم تَصُمِ

أَو فَتَحامَ إِن كُنتَ لَم تَصُمِ

O guest of Musa, the brother of Khuzayma, fast!

O guest of Musa, my brother Khuzaymah though deaf

Or else keep away, if you have not fasted.

Or Fataham if you have not become deaf

أَطرَقَ لَمّا أَتَيتَ مُمتَدِحاً

أَطرَقَ لَمّا أَتَيتَ مُمتَدِحاً

فَلَم يَقُل لا فَضلاً عَلى نَعَمِ

فَلَم يَقُل لا فَضلاً عَلى نَعَمِ

He lowered his head when you came praising him,

He lowered his gaze when you came singing praises

And did not say "no," let alone "yes."

So he said no merit over bounty

وَأَربَدَّ مِن خَشيَةِ السُؤالِ كَما

وَأَربَدَّ مِن خَشيَةِ السُؤالِ كَما

يَربَدُّ عِندَ الوَفاةِ ذُو أَلَمِ

يَربَدُّ عِندَ الوَفاةِ ذُو أَلَمِ

And he turned ashen for fear of a request, just as

And he shivered for fear of being questioned as

One in pain turns ashen at death.

One shivers at death, suffering pain

فَخِفتُ إِن ماتَ أَن أُقادَ بِهِ

فَخِفتُ إِن ماتَ أَن أُقادَ بِهِ

فَقُمتُ أَبغي النَجاةَ مِن أَمَمِ

فَقُمتُ أَبغي النَجاةَ مِن أَمَمِ

So I feared that, if he died, I would be killed in retaliation for his death.

I feared if he died I would be blamed for it

So I rose, seeking an escape close at hand.

So I got up seeking deliverance from blame

لَو أَنَّ كَنزَ العِبادِ في يَدِهِ

لَو أَنَّ كَنزَ العِبادِ في يَدِهِ

لَم يَدَعِ الإِعتِلالَ بِالعَدَمِ

لَم يَدَعِ الإِعتِلالَ بِالعَدَمِ

If mankind's treasure were in his hand,

If he had the treasure of servants in his hand

He would not give up pleading poverty.

He would not cease to suffer nothingness
