ياO أَباAbu (father of) الفَضلِal-Fadl هَيَّجَتكَhave stirred you الدِيارُthe dwellings
يا أَبا الفَضلِ هَيَّجَتكَ الدِيارُ
وَرَواحٌand an evening departure بِفُرقَةٍwith separation وَاِبتِكارُand departure at dawn
وَرَواحٌ بِفُرقَةٍ وَاِبتِكارُ
O Abu al-Fadl, the dwellings have stirred your longing,
O Abu Al-Fadl, the abodes have stirred you,
And evening departure with parting, and departure at dawn.
With partings and inventions.
كَمhow many وَكَمand how many نَظرَةًa glance نَظَرتُI looked بِعَينيwith my eye
كَم وَكَم نَظرَةً نَظَرتُ بِعَيني
لاnot بِعَينَيكَwith your two eyes حينَwhen لاno إيثارُselflessness
لا بِعَينَيكَ حينَ لا إيثارُ
How many, how many a glance I cast with my own eye,
How many a glance have I glanced with my eyes,
Not with your eyes, when there is no selflessness.
Not with your eyes, when there is no preferring.

And music I heard for you, while a cup was passed
And hearing I have heard for you, which gave me
To me, to its strains, by a richly perfumed maiden.
Costly myrrh upon it as a fragrant scent.

Musk kissed both her cheeks, and upon her
Musk kissed her cheeks, so in them
Traces of its kisses still remain.
Are remains of its kisses' traces.
