إيهاًEnough! دَعِleave off اللَومَblame عَنّيfrom me لَستُI am not مُزدَجِراdeterred
لاdo not تَسلُكtread اللَومَblame مِنّيwith me مَسلَكاًa path وَعِراrugged
Enough! Leave off blaming me; I will not be deterred.
Oh let blame fall from me, I'm not one to rebuke,
Do not tread a rugged path in reproaching me.
Do not take the blame from me down a rugged path.
رُقادُslumber عَينِيَmy eye مِنin relation to عَينيmy eye بِمَنزِلَةٍin esteem
لَكِنَّهاbut it فيin الهَوىlove تَستَحسِنُfinds pleasing السَهَراsleeplessness
My eye holds its slumber in esteem,
The sleep of my eyes differs from that of my eyes,
but in love it finds sleeplessness pleasing.
Yet in passion they prefer to stay up.
ماwhat ضَرَّharmed مَنone who كانwas مَهجوراًforsaken وَمُجتَنِباًand keeping apart
لَوif أَنَّهُthat he لَمnot يَكُنbe قَبلَbefore الهَوىlove بَشَراhuman
What harm would have befallen one forsaken and withdrawn,
What harm in one shunned and keeping apart,
had he not been human before love?
If he'd not been human before the throes of love?
أَمُرُّI pass بِالحَجَرِby the stone القاسيhard فَأَغبِطُهُso I envy it
لِأَنَّbecause قَلبَكِyour heart عِنديto me يُشبِهُresembles الحَجَراstone
I pass the hard stone and envy it,
I pass by rocks and envy them,
for, to me, your heart resembles stone.
For your heart next to mine resembles a rock.
أَناI المُقِرُّthe one confessing بِذَنبٍto a sin لَستُI am not صاحِبُهُits perpetrator
إِنif كانَis ذَنبٌa sin عَلىupon الإِقرارِconfession مُغتَفَراforgiven
I confess to a sin of which I am innocent,
I admit to a sin though it wasn't mine,
if a sin is forgiven upon confession.
If admitting sin leads to forgiveness.
أَحبَبتُI loved مِنout of حُبِّهاlove for her مَنwhoever كانَwas يُشبِهُهاresembling her
حَتّىuntil لَقَدindeed صِرتُI became أَهوىI love الشَمسَthe sun وَالقَمَراand the moon
Out of love for her, I loved whoever resembled her,
I loved those who resembled her in loving,
until I came to love the sun and the moon.
To the point I came to love the sun and the moon.
وَماand never ضَمِنتُI undertook to safeguard لَهاfor her سِرّاًa secret فَأَكتُمَهُso I conceal it
إِلّاexcept حَفَظتُI guarded عَلَيهِover it الدَمعَtears وَالبَصَراand sight
And never did I undertake to conceal a secret for her,
I've entrusted her no secret except to guard it
without keeping tears and gaze under guard for its sake.
With tear and gaze that's how I kept it safe.
لَهاfor her المجازُthe passage عَلىacross عَينيmy eye فَأَمنَعُهاso I restrain it
أَنto تَستَتِمَّcomplete إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle تَطرُفُit blinks النَظَراthe gaze
Her passage is across my eye, so I restrain it
She dominates my eyes but I forbid her
from completing its gaze whenever it blinks.
From staring hard when glance meets glance.
إِذاwhen تَخَوَّفتُI feared أَنthat تَبدوbe revealed سَرائِرُهاher secrets
كَلَّفتُهاI charged them فيwithin الحَشاthe breast الكِتمانَconcealment وَالحَذَراand caution
When I feared that her secrets might emerge,
When I fear her mysteries might show,
I charged them, within my breast, with concealment and caution.
I charge the darkness to conceal and take care.
لَمdid not يَعدُهاgo beyond her الشَوقُlonging قَلبيmy heart وَهيَwhile it فيin يَدِهاher hand
لَقَدindeed تَسَلّىit found solace بِهاin her أَوor بيagainst me لَقَدindeed غَدَراit acted treacherously
Longing did not carry my heart beyond her, while it lay in her hand;
Longing did not keep my heart safe with her,
it has indeed found solace in her—or has surely betrayed me.
It toyed with it, betrayed it, how it strayed!
