وَمُنتَجَعٍand a seeker of حَمديmy praise بِأَكرَمِwith the noblest رائِدٍscout
أَبَحتُI made accessible لَهُto him مِنّيof mine الحِمىthe guarded pasture حينَwhen أَثجَماhe halted
And a seeker of my praise, with the noblest scout—
I opened my guarded pasture to him when he halted.
رَآنيhe saw me بِعَينِwith the eye of الجودِgenerosity فَاِنتَهَزَand seized upon الَّتيthat which
طَلَبتُI sought وَلَمand did not أَفتَحopen إِلَيهِto him بِهاabout it فَماa mouth
He regarded me with generosity’s eye and seized upon what
I sought, though I had not opened my mouth to him about it.
ظَلمتُكَI would wrong you إِنif لَمnot أَجزِكَI repay you الشُكرَthanks مُسلِماًas a Muslim
جَعَلتَyou made إِلىto شُكريmy gratitude نَوالَكyour bounty سُلَّماa ladder
I would wrong you if, as a Muslim, I did not repay you with thanks;
you made your bounty a ladder to my gratitude.
أَمَسلَمَO Maslam قَدindeed أَحسَنتَyou did good ماas much as شِئتَyou wished مُسلِماًas a Muslim
بَدَأتَyou began بِمَعروفٍwith kindness وَقَدَّمتَand sent ahead أَنعُماfavors
O Maslam, you have done as much good as you wished, as a Muslim;
you began with kindness and sent favors ahead.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you لَمnot تَترُكleave يَداكَyour two hands ذَخيرَةًa reserve
لِغَيرِكَfor anyone but you مِنof شُكريmy gratitude وَلاnor مُتَلَوَّماroom for delay
For your hands have left no reserve
of my gratitude for anyone else, nor any room for delay.
إِذاif كُنتَyou are ذاpossessed of نَفسٍa soul جَوادٍgenerous ضَميرُهاits inner nature
فَلَيسَthen it does not يَضيرُharm الجَودَgenerosity أَنthat كُنتَyou are مُعدِماdestitute
If you have a soul generous in its innermost nature,
then being destitute does not impair generosity.
وَإِنَّand indeed اِمرِءاًa man نالَتهُhas reached him مِنكَfrom you قَرابَةٌkinship
لَمُستَوجِبٌsurely deserving of حَمديmy praise وَإِنeven if كانَhe is أَلوَماmost blameworthy
And surely a man bound to you by kinship
deserves my praise, even if he is most blameworthy.
عَفَوتُI pardoned فَلَمso did not آخُذhold to account بِذَنبٍfor a fault وَلَمand did not أَقُلsay
أَسَأتَyou did wrong وَإِنeven though كانَwas المُسيءُthe wrongdoer المُذَمَّماthe blameworthy one
I pardoned, exacting no penalty for a fault, nor saying,
“You did wrong,” though the wrongdoer deserved blame.
