How strange, the aloof apparition of your image,

and your heart, seeking appeasement and showing anger!

Why, through your estrangement, though the land is vast,

have all my paths become so narrow for me?

I weep, though my heart is gone; yet only

for losing you I weep, not for that departed heart.

Sleeplessness was brought to my eye after slumber,

and joy banished, by a lying slanderer's words.

You drove me away after making me drink

a cup of your love that no drinker could swallow.

Were what I feel like what you feel, I would not spend the night

a boon companion to sorrows, a friend to the stars.

Love has grown gray in my heart, and anguish has come of age

through sorrow, though gray hair has not spread through my locks.

    فَإِذا بَدا لَكِ في الذُنوبِ فَعاتِبي

    Return to me, that I may ease my anguish;

then, if you see fit, reproach me for my sins.

Why did I see the image of your apparition turning away

when it visited me, showing anger, off to one side?

By God, were your heart not reproachful,

your apparition would not reproach me in sleep.

If my sin is that loving you keeps me

from anyone but you, then I shall not repent of it.

If my heart sought to endure without your love,

it would not be my companion as long as I lived.

Love stripped me of my reason and my heart by force,

leaving nothing of me but a pallid body.

I do conceal my tears with my fingertips,

striving with all my might to hide them, while weeping overpowers me.

    بِفُنونِهِ أَفنى دَواءَ طَبائِبِ

    Love is a poison whose taste keeps changing;

in its many forms, it has exhausted healers' remedies.

    كَدَّرتِ بِالهِجرانِ صَفوَ مَشارِبي

    O Sihr, you have made me swallow love's choking griefs;

through estrangement you have clouded my clear draughts.

You mended my heart with love, then split it

by your desertion, leaving it no one to mend it.

Patience with you! For I see no recourse for myself

    except clinging to vain hope.

I shall die of grief, while my need remains

for what you hold, with no one left to pursue it.

    قُوموا فَعَزّوا مَعشَري وَأَقارِبي

    Behold, I have perished and died of love's pain;

rise, and console my people and my kin.

    نَفسي فِداءُ مُغاضِبي وَمُعاتِبي

    An apparition reproaches me, and a heart is angered;

my soul be ransom for the one angry with me, the one who reproaches me.

I shall answer love's summons, submitting to it,

even if the one I love does not answer me.

Surely the lover finds bliss in his love,

yet suffers loss through it, his misfortunes great.

Ask no one about love except a man

who knows its taste and has long experience.

And many sheltered women, tender and bashful,

    like figurines, dark-eyed and full-breasted,

    in disguise, visited me after

eyes had grown still and every watcher slept.

They gave me names, among them 'my lord,'

and 'my brother,' 'captor of the one I love,' and 'my captor.'

They unveiled radiant faces, as though they were

a lamp by night in a monk's church.

Dark-eyed, charming companions, they hunted with arrows

from their glances, unerring whenever they looked.

Youth planted for them the pomegranates of youth

    upon bosoms adorned with breastbones.

They showed me everything from a bewitching glance

to languorous coquetry and a captivating manner,

and a bewitching speaker's words, as though they were

pearls tumbling from the pearl-borer's string.

So I plucked the pomegranates of their breasts for pleasure,

and touched their buttocks as one at play.

My lips were saffron-stained from kissing upper chests

where the scent of overpowering perfume clung.

I kept giving them their fair share of myself in love,

until they took the best of me and left none behind.

They passed their night awake with me and at my gathering,

amid songstresses' revelry and women musicians' playing,

until, when they bade me farewell, they offered me

their parting greetings with eyes and brows.

How many a famed exploit have I among fair women,

and praiseworthy feats, and feats again!

What pleasure does the world hold if you are not

a man of the winecup in it, laid low by beloved women?
