I wooed her with stolen glances, and she yielded

to love—a maiden harder than stone.

I sent my gaze after her until, when she sensed

my love, she returned my affection with a glance.

So we are in dread of love's stirrings,

and in peril from the shifting of our gazes.

I never imagined wine not made from grapes,

until the eyes of wild cattle gave it to me unmixed.

I wronged myself for her sake until, when she was pleased,

I stationed the pupil of my eye to keep watch over her.

She spent the night inventing sins I knew nothing of,

and I spent the night seeking from her a way to be excused.
