إِذاwhen اِلتَقَيناwe meet مَنَعناwe deny النَومَsleep أَعيُنَناour eyes
وَلاand not نُلائِمُwe are in accord with نَوماًsleep حينَwhen نَفتَرِقُwe part
When we meet, we deny our eyes sleep,
When we meet, our eyes deny sleep
Nor do we make peace with sleep when we part.
And we do not blame sleep when we part
أُقِرُّI confess بِالذَنبِto the fault مِنّيof mine لَستُI do not أَعرِفُهُknow it
كَيماso that أَقولَI may say كَماjust as قالَتshe said فَنَتَّفِقُand so we agree
I confess to a fault of mine I do not know,
I confess to a sin I do not recognize
So I may say as she said, and we agree.
So I can say, as she said, we agree
حَبَستُI reserved دَمعيmy tears عَلىfor ذَنبٍa fault تُجَدِّدُهُshe renews it
فَكُلُّso every يَومٍday دُموعُthe tears العَينِof the eye تَستَبِقُrace one another
I have reserved my tears for a fault she renews,
I held back my tears for a sin she renews
So every day the eye’s tears race one another.
So each day the tears of my eyes outpace
