Say to him who ignorantly grew haughty when we brought him honor:

The freeborn do not glory in conceit.

So desist and hold back, for indeed

Eyes have strayed from fairness in judging you.

Which of you shielded one under his protection with might

Before our house took him in?

Or hoped to elude a people with a blood debt,

Whom blood feuds have never ceased to ride?

That was not found among you; so abandon pride

In what affords no rightful cause for boasting.

    وَدَعوا مَن لَهُ عَبيدُ نِزارُ

    As for Nizar, vie with them in boasting and claim superiority;

And leave alone him whose slaves are Nizar.

For through us the abject among you gained might, while Time

Returns again and again against you with misfortune.

    إِنَّهُ بَينَ أَهلِهِ أَطوارُ

    Beware the turn of time against you;

For it has many phases among its people.

Lest you and we be restored to our former state—

With humiliation for the lone, most abject one.

She vied with us in boasting when we laid our pride before her—

    Quraysh, whose pride is borrowed.

She spoke of her might, though among her there was no

Refuge before she sought our protection.

Her might lay only in mountains

    She climbed as hyraxes climb.

O you who boast of might, though might

And glory belong to a people other than you!

Tell us who is mightier: al-Mansur

Even at his height, or the Ansar?

For ours was might before Quraysh had might,

While Quraysh in those ages were merchants.
