أَمّاas for النَحيبُsobbing فَإِنّيfor indeed I سَوفَshall أَنتَحِبُI sob
أَمّا النَحيبُ فَإِنّي سَوفَ أَنتَحِبُ

عَلى الأَحِبَّةِ إِن شَطّوا وَإِن قَرُبوا
As for sobbing, I shall indeed sob
For my loved ones, whether they are far away or near.

أَبكي عَلَيها بِعَينٍ دَمعُها سَرِبُ
I wandered, dejected, at the quay of al-Kalla',
Weeping over it with an eye whose tears stream.

فَعُدتُ أَبكي عَلى نَفسي وَأَنتَحِبُ
When I saw how far I had to go to visit them,
I returned to weeping for myself and sobbing.
ماwhat ضَرَّharm مَنone who كانَwas يَنأىstaying far away عَنfrom أَحِبَّتِهِhis loved ones

What harm would it do one far from his loved ones
If no cord were stretched to prolong his life?

O dweller in Kufa, absorbed in your pleasure,
Rapture has drawn me away from no beloved but you.

I once lived in Basra, whose dweller is envied;
Piety and youthful passion surely keep company there.

وَإِنَّما هَمُّهُنَّ اللَهوُ وَاللَعِبُ
I gazed there upon beautiful, dark-eyed women,
And their sole concern is amusement and play.

Al-'Atik is indeed a quarter I have never passed through
Without returning with my soul stolen away there.

Near al-Khurayba are graceful women who have bewitched us,
Like oryxes in meadows surrounded by grass.

Dunes of sand: when their lower slopes tremble,
The boughs above sway with their fruit.

No Rajab has passed me by without my delighting in it;
Ah, how lovely is Rajab—if only Rajab would last for me!

When I appeared before her at al-Mirbad, she veiled herself
From me—though the sun's light can hardly be veiled.

Then her maid hastened to her with whispered words;
She laughed, then said, 'This is a strange affair.'

Suffering and weariness have afflicted him through his love for you.'

She said, 'Yes, you love us.' I answered her,
'Aye, by the union I hope for and seek!

May God grant my eye no joy in its glimpse of you,
As it looks toward you, if I desire anyone but you.'
فَلَوso if only تَرانيyou saw me وَخَدّيand my cheek فَوقَupon راحَتِهاher palm

If only you could see me, my cheek upon her palm,
And she had drawn close, though our knees had not yet done so.

Then we parted without sin, and this is how we are:
We yearn to meet, but suspicious conduct is not our way.

Tawny and Jewish, whose masters are Arabs.

A foster-father in the heat of midday.

Red when it appears, yellow when mixed,
As though sparks of fire blaze within it.

Its redness reddens the cupbearer's palm,
As though he were stained with mulberries.
