وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَخلوI surely withdraw alone مُذsince فَقَدتُكِI lost you دائِباًcontinually
فَأَنقُشُthen I trace تِمثالاًa likeness لِوَجهِكِof your face فيin التُربِthe dust
And indeed, ever since I lost you, I continually withdraw into solitude,
then trace a likeness of your face in the dust.
فَأَسقيهِthen I water it مِنfrom عَينيmy eye وَأَشكوand I complain تَضَرُّعاًin humble supplication
إِلَيهِto it بِماof what أَلقاهُI endure it مِنof شِدَّةِseverity الكَربِanguish
Then I water it with tears from my eye and humbly complain
to it of the terrible anguish I endure.
فَوَاللَهِfor, by God ماnot أَدريI know بِماfor what أَناI مُذنِبٌguilty
إِلَيكِagainst you سِوىexcept الإِفراطَexcess فيin شِدَّةِintensity الحُبِّlove
For by God, I know not how I have sinned
against you, except by loving too intensely.
فَإِنso if كانَis ذاthis ذَنبيmy sin الَّذيwhich تَدَّعينَهُyou allege it
فَلاthen may ... not فَرَّجَrelieve الرَحمَنُthe All-Merciful ذَلِكَthat مِنof ذَنبيmy sin
So if this is my sin, the one you allege,
then may the All-Merciful never relieve me of that sin.
بِطَرفيthrough my eye وَقَلبيand my heart يَستَذِلُّنِيَsubjugates me الهَوىpassion
فَمَنthen who ذاthat one الَّذيwho يُعديgrants redress عَلىagainst الطَرفِthe eye وَالقَلبِand the heart
Through my eye and my heart, passion subjugates me;
who, then, will grant me redress against the eye and the heart?
