وَبِتناand we spent the night عَلىin رُغمِdefiance of الحَسودِthe envious one وَبَينَناand between us
حَديثٌtalk كَريحِlike the scent of المِسكِmusk شيبَwas mingled بِهِwith it الخَمرُwine
And we spent the night despite the envious one, and between us
Despite the envious we spent the night together,
Was talk like the scent of musk with which wine was mingled.
Our talk like musk-scented wine, aging as we conversed.
حَديثٌtalk لَوَif اَنَّthat المَيتَthe dead man يَحياcomes to life بِبَعضِهِthrough a little of it
لَأَصبَحَhe would become حَيّاًalive بَعدَafter ماthat ضَمَّهُembraced him القَبرُthe grave
Talk—if a dead man could come to life through a little of it,
If some of that talk could revive the dead,
He would be alive again after the grave had embraced him.
He'd wake in his grave after being shrouded.
فَوَسَّدتُهُso I pillowed him كَفيmy palm وَبِتُّand I spent the night ضَجيعَهُhis bedfellow
وَقُلتُand I said لِلَيليto my night طُلbe long فَقَدfor indeed رَقَدَhas fallen asleep البَدرُthe full moon
So I made my palm his pillow and spent the night beside him,
I clasped his wrist and we slept side by side,
And told my night, 'Be long, for the full moon has fallen asleep.'
And told the night, "Be long, for the moon has set."
فَلَمّاthen when أَضاءَshone الصُبحُthe dawn فَرَّقَseparated بَينَناbetween us
وَأَيُّand what نَعيمٍbliss لاnot يُكَدِّرُهُmars it الدَهرُtime
Then, when dawn shone, it parted us;
When dawn broke it parted him from me -
And what bliss does time not mar?
What joy is there that time does not ruin?
