إِلّا جَعَلتُ لَهُ مِن أَمرِهِ الخِيَرا
And a companion—wishes never let me choose a hope
And a friend whom fate gave me no choice with
without my granting him the best in his affairs.
I wished for him nothing but the best

لَم يَتَّرِك لِلرِضى عَيناً وَلا أَثَرا
Lapses of familiarity befell him over a matter
Though chances for intimacy between us passed by
that left neither sign nor trace of goodwill.
Leaving no trace of pleasure or peace behind
لَمdid not أُعطِهِgive him مُهلَةَa respite العُتبىmaking amends فَيُعتِبَنيso he might appease me

وَلا تَعَتَّبتُ حَتّى ضَيَّعَ العُذُرا
I gave him no respite to make amends and appease me,
I gave him no time for reproach so he’d blame me
nor did I reproach him until he had squandered his excuses.
Nor felt discontent till excuses were gone from sight
