أَبَعدَafter…? أَبيAbu (father of) موسىMusa أُسَرُّI rejoice بِبَلدَةٍin a town
أَبَعدَ أَبي موسى أُسَرُّ بِبَلدَةٍ
مِنَof العَيشِlife أَوor أُفضيI pass through بِشَيءٍsome portion مِنَof الدَهرِtime
مِنَ العَيشِ أَو أُفضي بِشَيءٍ مِنَ الدَهرِ
After Abu Musa, shall I find joy in any town
After my father Musa, do I secretly prefer
in life, or pass through any stretch of time?
A life, or divulge anything of fate?
بَكَيتُI wept فَماyet not تَفنىrun out الدُموعُthe tears وَلاand not البُكاthe weeping
بَكَيتُ فَما تَفنى الدُموعُ وَلا البُكا
كَأَنَّas though دُموعَtears العَينِthe eye تَغرِفُdraw water مِنfrom بَحرِa sea
كَأَنَّ دُموعَ العَينِ تَغرِفُ مِن بَحرِ
I wept, yet neither tears nor weeping come to an end,
I wept, but neither tears nor sobbing cease -
As though the eye’s tears were drawing from a sea.
As though the tears of my eyes draw from a sea
