لَيسَthere is not عَلىon account of البِرذَونِthe hack مِنany فَوتِloss
Tell Ibn Mayy: do not be distraught;
Tell the son of Mayy not to despair,
Losing the hack is no loss.
No loss befalls the saddlebags.
طَأطَأَlowered مِنsome of تيهِكَyour pride فُقدانُهُits loss
وَكُنتَand you were فيهِabout it عالِيَloud الصَوتِof voice
Its loss has brought your pride low,
His absence has bowed you in confusion,
And you used to speak loudly of it.
Yet you were loud of voice in his presence.
وَكُنتَand you used to لاnot تَنزِلُdismount عَنfrom ظَهرِهِits back
وَلَوand even if مِنَfrom الحُشِّthe privy إِلىto البَيتِthe house
And you would not dismount from its back,
You would not dismount from his back,
Even to go from the privy to the house.
Even from the Hushsh to the Bayt.
ماnot ماتَdied مِنof حَتفٍnatural death وَلَكِنَّهُbut it
ماتَdied مِنَfrom الشَوقِlonging إِلىfor المَوتِdeath
It did not die a natural death, but it
He did not die a violent death, rather
Died of longing for death.
He died from yearning for death.
