You grew noble—history crucifies you openly
Like a spear that crucifies history openly
on paper, whenever it becomes a secret.
On paper, when it becomes a secret,
ويرسِمُand draws بالسّوادِin black هُمومَcares وجهٍa face
تجعَّدَgrew wrinkled فيin شُقوقِcracks العُمْرِlife عُمْراfor a lifetime
And in black ink it draws its sorrows as a face
And draws in black the cares of a face
wrinkled for a lifetime in the fissures of age.
That grew wrinkled in life's cracks for a lifetime.
فَياso, O وجْهًاa face قرأتُI read الصبرَpatience فيهِin it
وفيand in قَسَماتهِits features أبصرتُI saw قهْراoppression
O face in which I read endurance,
So, O face, in which I read patience,
and in whose features I beheld oppression:
And in whose features I saw oppression,
تجلّىbecame manifest فيكَin you هذاthis الجُرْحُthe wound حتّىuntil

this wound revealed itself in you until
This wound revealed itself in you, until
it sipped sweetness from you—and found it bitter.
It sipped from you the bitter taste of sweetness.
فللفُقَراءِso, for the poor فـيin رسْمِdrawing الحَكـايـاthe tales

For the poor, in the picturing of tales,
So the poor have, in the drawing of tales,
are houses of ink—and let ink be a shelter.
Homes of ink—alas for you!—ink as a shelter.
تنامُsleeps الحربُwar... والقتلىand the slain نيامُasleep
ويبقىand remains الرسْمُthe drawing للأيّامfor days to come ذكْرىa memory
War sleeps... and the slain lie sleeping,
War sleeps... and the slain are asleep,
and the drawing remains, a memory for days to come.
And the drawing remains a memory for days to come.
