Why did you not ask the earth about their memory

and learn—since we are Arabness—who they are?

They are, in exile, the echo of a voice with neither

sword nor mouth amid the calamities of time.

Fragments—as though the wind were a knife that passed

through glass of fear; within its reach they shattered.

Carcasses whose peace lagged in dullness,

and Samih called out among the crowds: “Advance!”

So the deaf stone advanced, answering the call,

with a palm’s circling... it pours forth and pelts.

And the silence standing guard in the expanse spoke,

and the weak birds of this earth did not speak.

Rise, O Samih, and eulogize the Bedouin Arabs; rise

alive, so that blood may neigh from your Arabness.
