يضيقُtightens الصّدرُthe chest، والدّنياand the world تَضيقُnarrows
إذاwhen خانَbetrays الوَفاloyalty مِنهاfrom it صديقُa friend
The chest tightens, and the world narrows,
My chest tightens, and the world closes in,
When a friend within it betrays loyalty.
When loyalty is betrayed by a friend.
أَمِنْتُI trusted الماءَthe water ظمآنًاthirsty لكأسٍfor a cup
شربتُI drank فَسالَand so flowed فيin جوفيmy interior حريقُa fire
I trusted the water, thirsty for a cup;
Thirsty, I trusted the water for a cup,
I drank, and a fire flowed inside me.
I drank, and within me blazed a fire.
وداهَمَنيand assailed me الكَرىslumber والنّاسُand the people صَحْوٌawake
فكيفَso how العينُthe eye فيin موتٍdeath تُفيقُawakens؟
And slumber assailed me while the people were awake;
Sadness and people awake besieged me,
So how can the eye awaken in death?
How can the eye awaken in death?
ينازعُنيcontends with me الغُروبُsunset سَوادَblackness لَيلof a night
لهُit has شمسٌa sun.. يؤلّبهاstirs it up شُروقُa sunrise
Sunset wrestles with me over the blackness of a night
Sunset contends with me the darkness of night,
That has a sun... a sunrise stirs it up.
It has a sun, unleashed at dawn.
وغضبانًاand angry مَشيْتُI walked ومالَand leaned نحويْtoward me
رصيفُthe sidewalk الحُزنِof sorrow يَعلوهُrises above it الطريقُthe road
And, angry, I walked, and toward me leaned
Angrily I walked as the sidewalk bent toward me,
The sidewalk of sorrow, with the road rising above it.
The pavement of sorrow mounting above the road.
عَبرْتُI crossed هَجيرَهُits noonday heat والنّاسُand the people حوليْaround me
كطوقِlike the collar العَبْدِof the slave تَخْشاهُfears it الرَّقيقُthe enslaved
I crossed its noonday heat, with people around me
I crossed its murmuring as people surrounded me,
Like a slave's collar, feared by the enslaved.
Like the slave's shackle, feared by the weak.
حَبَسْتُI imprisoned الآهthe sigh فيin صَدرٍa chest تلظّىblazed
وصوتُand the voice القلبِof the heart فيin جَوفيmy interior طليقُfree
I imprisoned the sigh in a chest that blazed,
I held my sigh within a blazing chest,
And the heart's voice is free inside me.
While the voice of my heart within me was free.
وَجفَّand dried up الوجدُlonging وانثالتْand poured forth دُموعيْmy tears
كموجِlike the waves البَحْرِof the sea يَذروهُscatters it الغَريقُthe drowning man
And longing dried up, and my tears poured forth
Passion dried up and my tears poured down
Like the sea's waves, scattered by the drowning man.
Like the sea's waves battering a drowning man.
تَدَحْرَجُroll فوقَover وجهِthe face الحُزنِof sorrow سَبْقًاracing ahead
فَصَحْنُfor the dish الخَدِّof the cheek يُغْريهِentices it العَقيقُagate
They roll over sorrow's face, racing ahead,
Rolling down the cheek of sorrow fastest,
For the cheek's dish is enticed by agate.
The bowl of my cheek enticed by carnelian.
