لاno نومَsleep يأتيcomes، والأنامُwhile humankind نيامُasleep
لا نومَ يأتي، والأنامُ نيامُ
والعينُand the eye كأْسٌa cup.. والدُّموعand the tears مُدامُwine
والعينُ كأْسٌ.. والدُّموع مُدامُ
No sleep comes, while humankind lies asleep.
No sleep comes, though all the world's at rest
And the eye is a cup, and the tears are wine.
These eyes a chalice are.. tears, wine unpressed
وحديْI alone وعينيْand my eye منذُsince جافاهاforsook it الكَرىslumber
وحديْ وعينيْ منذُ جافاها الكَرى
النومُsleep خصمٌa foe.. والسُّكونُand stillness كلامُspeech
النومُ خصمٌ.. والسُّكونُ كلامُ
Alone are my eye and I, since slumber forsook it.
Since, from their affliction, slumber fled these eyes
Sleep is a foe, and stillness is speech.
My foe is sleep.. and silence can but attest
