    وجسْمِي باردٌ، قَلِقٌ، نَحيلُ

    My end drew near, and a reproacher did not recognize me;

And my body is cold, restless, and thin.

As though life were water upon a palm,

When its fingers tremble, it flows away.

And becomes a mere memory made of words,

And is forgotten as departure widens.

I asked the people: Will I be forgotten? They answered:

Withering erases the fragrance of roses.

For no one has attained immortality in remembrance

Like the one at whose birth the ruins smiled.

An orphan, whom the One fashioned solitary,

Without a mother or an uncle to offer relief.

Revelation came to him—not a human who might forget,

Nor a jinn with a heart that soon grows weary.

And the voice came, filling the cave: Read!

Then Muhammad said: What shall I say?

And I am no reader of what I do not know,

Nor am I heedless of what you say.

Then he called: O beloved, wrap me up!

The blaze of cold lodges in my soul.

    لهُ وقْعٌ على صَدْري ثَقيلُ

    And the voice of Truth courses through the ears;

Its impact on my breast is heavy.

So she felt no fear, as though her heart knew,

And she concealed nothing; astonishment made her speak:

By your life, you have gently borne the helpless,

While others among humankind are ever hasty.

You are indeed the prophet of the One who bestowed on creation

The question of the unseen, and minds awoke.

And the news spread among the people, until

The road broke apart amid the footsteps of departure.

So they came secretly to the land of Taybah,

As though their hurried footsteps were horses.

And one journeying toward Thawr was followed

By the doves of the grove, their cooing preceding them.

At its thresholds, a group warned one another

That the cave was abandoned and crumbling.

    فما قَدِرُوا، وما تمَّ الدُّخولُ

    They turned away after their faces grew ugly;

So they were powerless, and no entry took place.

And they did not see, though they looked and went to extremes,

And they did not succeed, even if the guide was right.

So the two companions traveled on a wing,

Light-footed—ah, as though the earth were a mile.

The people became brothers, and al-Qaswa anchored

At the site of the House, with Salul watching her.

The oppressor's standing rose, and he came hastening,

And the drums beat out the voice of death.

And just before the truce, they witnessed no battle

Like Badr, the day the routed remnants shunned it.

The conquest followed it, and the idols lay slain,

So neither Hubal nor Uzza charges forth.

Captives without fetters spoke at length:

The lowly are honored under his command.

And he circled the House seven times in farewell,

Like a moon that setting will overtake.

Take heed, O people, listen to me!

Perhaps, after this year of mine, I shall not last another year.

And death came bashfully and laid down

The book of the unseen: the time for departure has come.

He passed on, and the earth, reverent, prayed

For him, and the tears of her qiblah flowed.
