    Without a shadow, as though the sun were fading,

    And my body, wasted thin, kept crawling.

    ولولا الصوتُ ما بَصَروا وهَبُّوا

    The people saw me when I cried out in fear;

    Without the sound, they would not have seen me or sprung up.

    خلاف النّاسِ إنْ فارقتُ يكبو

    In love, I have a generous heart;

    Unlike others, it stumbles if I part.

    Take me toward my life, if only a little,

    For this death urges us onward with song, itself a caravan.

    It drives us singly... or in multitudes,

    To a pit whose path lies in love.

    And I do not know—will my doubts kill me?

    And I do not know—what does the heart yearn for?

    For a life as keen as a lifetime’s sword,

    And they spoke truly: the sword can fail to cut!

    By your life, love has not forgotten me for a sin,

    Yet passion is a sin for the soul.
