منْfrom حُسْنِgoodness حظِّfortune الحُبِّlove أنّيthat I عاشِقٌa lover
لأُتِمَّso I may complete لِلعشّـاقِfor lovers وصْفَthe description of عَذابهِits torment
It is love's good fortune that I am a lover,
So I may complete for lovers the description of its torment.
وأرومُand I seek كـلَّevery قصيدةٍpoem كُتِبتْwas written بهِabout it
كيْso that أنزِعَI may strip away الأحـلامَthe dreams منfrom كُـتَّابهِits writers
And I seek every poem written about it,
To strip the dreams from its writers.
فَلَقدْfor indeed مَررْتُI passed بألفِby a thousand قلبٍheart ظامئٍthirsty
وعرفتُand I learned أنَّthat الماءَwater مِلءُwhat fills سرابهِits mirage
For I have passed by a thousand thirsty hearts,
And learned that water fills its mirage.
وركبتُand I boarded فُلكـًاa vessel للحقيقةِfor truth ملهمًاinspired
ونسيتُand I forgot أنّthat الوهْمَillusion مِنْamong ركَّابهِits passengers
And, inspired, I boarded a vessel for truth,
And forgot that illusion was among its passengers.
ماnot كانَwas زيْفًاa sham حبُّthe love of «عَبْلةَAbla» للفتىfor the young man
حينَwhen استباحَoverran الشوقُlonging بِيضَthe gleaming tips of حِرابهِhis lances
Abla's love for the young man was no sham,
When longing overran his gleaming lances.
كمhow greatly هالنيawed me ماwhat قالَsaid «قيسٌQays» فيabout الهوىpassion
حتَّىuntil حسِبتُI thought العِشقَpassionate love مِنْamong طُلّابهِhis pupils
How greatly what Qays said of passion awed me,
Until I deemed passionate love one of his pupils.
وسمعتُand I heard ماwhat همسَتwhispered شفاهُthe lips of بثينةٍButhayna

And I heard what Buthayna's lips whispered,
When Jamil favored her with his saliva.

Qabil went utterly mad when he was seared;
He split the earth, reproaching his raven.
هذاthis أخيmy brother... لكنَّbut حُبّيmy love قاتليmy killer
والحُبُّand love ياO هذاyou there اتِّباعُfollowing طِلابِهِits quest
This is my brother—but my love is my killer.
And love, you there, means following its quest.
ياO حبُّlove مهلًاwait، قدalready أضعناwe have squandered حُبَّناour love
مُذْsince غادرَabandoned الشُّعراءُthe poets نَظْمَversifying عِتابهِits reproaches
O love, wait—we have squandered our love,
Since the poets ceased versifying its reproaches.
فتهافَتواso they rushed headlong شِعْرًاin verse بكلِّwith every غِوايةٍseduction
والقلْبُand the heart مَوْؤودٌburied alive بغيرِin other than تُرابهِits soil
So they rushed headlong into verse with every seduction,
And the heart is buried alive in soil not its own.
كلٌّeach one يُرتِّبُarranges لِلفريسةِfor the prey دوْرَهاits role
ويسِنُّand sharpens نَصْلًاa blade مِنْfrom بَديعِthe artistry of كِذابهِhis falsehood
Each assigns the prey its role,
And sharpens a blade from the artistry of his falsehood.
فالحُبُّfor love ياO أهْلَpeople of الغَرامِpassion جريمةٌa crime
فيهاin it الضحاياthe victims تستويare equal بعقابهِin its punishment
For love, O people of passion, is a crime,
In which the victims are alike in bearing its punishment.
سَلْask راحلًاone who departs كيفَhow انطوىfolded inward برحيلهِwith his departure
قلْبٌa heart لِعاشِقةٍof a woman in love... تُسائلُshe asks مـاwhat بـهِis with him؟
Ask one who departs how his departure folded up
The heart of a woman in love—she asks what ails him.
سَكَنَhe inhabited النِّساءَthe women جميعَهُنَّall of them مُجرِّبًاexperimenting
والغَدْرُand treachery صلَّىprayed فيin سَماthe heaven of مِحرابهِhis prayer niche
He inhabited all the women, experimenting,
And treachery prayed in the heaven of his prayer niche.
وخيانةٌand betrayal قدalready أشْهرتbrandished سيفًاa sword لهاfor itself
لتُغيظَto enrage سيفــًاa sword للوَفــاof fidelity بجِرابـهِin its sheath
And betrayal has brandished a sword of its own,
To enrage fidelity's sword in its sheath.
I have fallen in love ولفَّنيand wrapped me ثوبُthe robe of الهَوىpassion
ورَتقتُand I mended قلبيmy heart مِنْfrom حَريرِthe silk of ثيابهِits garments
Behold, I have fallen in love, and passion's robe has wrapped me,
And I mended my heart with silk from its garments.
ورددتُand I brought back عمريmy life منfrom عتيقِtimeworn كهولةٍmiddle age
مِنْfrom بعدafter ماwhen ولَّىdeparted شِغافُthe inmost heart of شبابهِits youth
And brought my life back from timeworn middle age,
After the inmost heart of its youth had departed.
فَضّتْshe broke بَكارةَthe virginity of قلْبِهاher heart لأَكونَهاso I might become her
فَسَكنْـتُـهُso I inhabited it... ثُمَّthen استَكنْتُI humbled myself ببابهِat its door
She broke her heart's virginity so that I might become her,
So I inhabited it, then humbled myself at its door.
سأُعلِّمُI shall teach العُشَّاقَlovers أنَّthat مَحبَّتيmy love
ماءٌwater يَفيضُoverflows علىover النَّدىthe dew بِحُبابهِwith its bubbles
I shall teach lovers that my love
Is water that spills over the dew with its bubbles.
فأناfor I المتيَّمُthe one enslaved by love والمولَّهُand the love-crazed one فيin اللِّقاmeeting
وأناand I غَريمُthe adversary of الحُبِّlove عِندَduring غيابهِits absence
For I am love's captive and love-crazed when we meet,
And I am love's adversary in its absence.
تالّلهِby God لوif كانَwere الهوىpassion مِلْكًاa possession لناours
لتقاسمَwould share among themselves العُشَّاقُlovers دَوْرَthe role of خَرابهِits ruin
By God, if passion were ours to own,
Lovers would share the role of bringing it to ruin.
لكنِّـهُbut it مِنْfrom حكْمةٍwisdom سَينالُهاwill attain it
مَنْwhoever عافَspurned قِشْرَthe husk of الحُبِّlove دونَrather than لُبابهِits kernel
But it comes from a wisdom that will be attained
By whoever spurns love's husk, not its kernel.
