    Amman, how many lands have grown too narrow for humankind,

    And you made room, O breast baptized in heaven.

    Yours, O refuge of the eye, is a merciful one's compassion.

    If it sheds tears, seven appear as balm.

    The fountain overflowed upon your soil, and its nymphs

    Were the witnesses when sanctuary flowed from it.

    أضنينَ مَنْ بَذَرَ الربيعَ وبَرعَما

    Behold the sisters of Arabhood, in wasting sickness;

    They wore down whoever sowed spring and put forth buds.

    Cities, as though death were the secret of their air,

    And the people are in death, as though they were dolls.
