You grew noble—history crucifies you openly

on paper, whenever it becomes a secret.

And in black ink it draws its sorrows as a face

wrinkled for a lifetime in the fissures of age.

O face in which I read endurance,

and in whose features I beheld oppression:

this wound revealed itself in you until

it sipped sweetness from you—and found it bitter.

For the poor, in the picturing of tales,

are houses of ink—and let ink be a shelter.

War sleeps... and the slain lie sleeping,

and the drawing remains, a memory for days to come.
