أشقيتُI tormented روحيْmy soul فيin هوىًlove لاnot يستحِقْdeserves
وتركتُand I left قلبًاa heart فيin غيابيَmy absence يحترِقْit burns
I tormented my soul with a love unworthy of it,
I tormented my soul with love unworthy,
And left a heart burning in my absence.
And left a heart burning in my absence.
لوif كنتُI was أَعْقِـلُI understand للعذابِfor torment وسيلةًa means
لصلبتُI would have crucified قلبيْmy heart فيin المدىthe expanse حتَّىuntil يَرِقْit softens
Had I understood a means of torment,
Had I been reasonable toward suffering
I would have crucified my heart in the expanse until it grew tender,
I'd have steeled my heart through time's expanse.
ولَرُحتُand I would have gone on أمـْلأُI fill للقصائدِfor the poems بحْرَهـاtheir sea
تيهًاbewilderment بهِin it صوتُthe voice of الملامةِreproach قدalready غَرِقْdrowned
And gone on filling the poems' sea
And I'd have filled poems' seas brimful
With bewilderment in which the voice of reproach had drowned.
Wandering, drowned in blame's echoes.
لكنَّbut قلبيَmy heart مثلَlike همَّازِa faultfinder الأذىharm
إنْif لمnot يجدْit finds فيin الحُسنِbeauty قُبحًاugliness يختلِقْit invents
But my heart is like a hurtful faultfinder:
But my heart is like one who hurts others,
If it finds no ugliness in beauty, it invents it.
Making up flaws if perfection's seen.

It casts aside all the creeds of love;
It throws away all of love's religions
If a creed spreads among lovers, it embraces it.
If lovers' faith spreads and is kept.

Like date stones in an unmarried woman's palm grove, with
Like a date-stone in a palm tree owned by none,
Fronds making ready for the stones to split open;
Fronds furnish perches till stones split.

Or like an arrow in unpracticed hands:
Or like an arrow in fierce warriors' hands-
If the bow tilts in their hands from fear, it flies.
If the bow curves from fear, off flies the shaft.

In every stray thought, it has a restless dream.
Each whim has an uneasy dream.

If the wind defies it, it pays her no heed;
If the wind opposes it, it pays no heed,
And through (breezes) like perfume, it slips.
And (breezes) like perfume through it slip.
كنّاwe were اتفقناwe agreed فيin غياهبِdark recesses of صفوةٍpurity
أنّthat العذابَtorment لحُبِّfor love of فاتنةٍan enchantress خُلِقْwas created
We had agreed in the dark recesses of purity
We had agreed, in the shadows of intimacy,
That torment was created for loving an enchantress.
That the torment of loving a beauty was created.
فَـرَّfled الكلامُspeech ونامَand slept تحتَbeneath سِياطهاher whips

Speech fled and slept beneath her whips,
Words fled, and under her whips fell asleep,
Hoping for torment, as though we had not agreed.
Seeking torment as if we hadn't agreed.
سِحْرُthe magic of الأحاديثِconversations استمالَenticed فضولَهُits curiosity

إنْif راقَwas pleasing للآذانِto the ears سَمْعًاa hearing يَسْترِقْit steals
The magic of conversation enticed its curiosity;
The magic of conversation won over his curiosity
If it delights the ears, it steals a listen.
If, for listening ears, a secretly heard voice flowed.
لوif أنَّthat صمتًاa silence فيon شفاهٍlips راقهُpleased it
سلَّit unsheathed الكلامَspeech كعاشقٍlike a lover صبٍّlovesick لَبِقْeloquent
If a silence on lips pleased it,
Had he known that love's outcome
It would unsheathe speech like an eloquent, lovesick lover.
Is a hook on which fancy hangs, pierced,

صنارةٌa fishhook للوهْمِfor illusion فيهاon it قدْalready عَلِقْit was caught!
Had it known that the end of love
He'd have mustered resolve in ardor's breast
Was illusion's fishhook, on which it was already caught,
And pondered profoundly the promises made.

It would have rallied the moans in the breast of love's anguish,
No harm to my heart had I remained as I was,
And pondered deeply whom it had trusted.
A spirit drowned in weeping, choking to death!
ماwhat ضرَّharmed قلبيْmy heart لوif بقيتُI remained كماas أناI
روحًاa soul تماهَىmerged فيwith النشيجِsobbing ليختنِقْso it might suffocate!
What harm would it have done my heart had I stayed as I am—
Or been a lock of hair by dreaminess touched,
A soul merged with sobbing, to suffocate!
Smit by seduction's spell, body bent, desiring.
أوor كانit was شِعْرًاpoetry مِنfrom خيالٍa fantasy مَسَّهُtouched it

سِحرُthe magic of الغوايةِseduction فانحنَىthen it bowed جسَدًاas a body شَبِقْlustful
Or had it been poetry from a fantasy touched
I'd have cast the scent of fingers over it
By seduction's magic, then bowed as a lustful body.
And it would have sighed, the flesh silently sweating.
ألقىit cast برائحةِwith the scent of الأصابعِfingers فوقَهاover her
فَتنهَّدتْso she sighed والجسمُand the body فيin صمتٍsilence عَرِقْsweated
It cast the scent of fingers upon her;
And its beauty would have awakened from rapture––
So she sighed, and the body sweated in silence.
While the heart, from treachery, did not awaken.
وأفاقَand awoke مِنfrom فرطِan excess of الصبابةِlonging حُسْنُهاher beauty
والقلبُand the heart مِنfrom فرطِan excess of الخيانةِbetrayal لمnot يُفِقْawaken
And her beauty awoke from an excess of longing,
I unleashed my voice into the horizon, to call it back.
And the heart, from an excess of betrayal, did not awaken.
The horizon narrowed; the heart overflowed and could bear no more.
أطلقتُI released صوتيmy voice فيinto المدَىthe expanse لأردَّهُso I might bring it back
ضاقَnarrowed المدىthe expanse، والقلبُand the heart رانَgrew tarnished ولمand not يُطِقْcould endure
I released my voice into the expanse to bring it back;
I freed every stranger who'd lodged within it
The expanse narrowed, and the heart grew tarnished and could not endure.
But from its darkness it did not escape.
أعتقتُI freed كلَّevery غريبةٍa female stranger سكَنتْdwelt بهِin it
لكنّـهُbut it مِـنْfrom ظلمـهِits injustice لـمْnot ينعَتِقْwas freed
I freed every strange woman who had dwelt in it,
I destroyed it to get a soul that for it
But it was not freed from its own injustice.
–Capricious souls’––if destroyed, would still live!
أزهقتُـهُI slew it لأنـالَso I might gain مِنْfrom روحٍa soul لَـهُbelonging to it
يحياit lives إنif زُهِقْit is slain!
I slew it to gain a share of a soul it had;
I burdened it when for my chest I tore it;
Shifting from soul to soul... it lives if slain!
It slit my tunic, caring nothing if stolen.
أتعبتُهُI wearied it لمّـاwhen لِصدريَto my breast جُزْتهُI crossed it
شقَّit tore الخميصةَthe striped cloak لاnot يباليit cares إنif سُرِقْit was stolen
I wearied it when I took it across to my breast;
So I left it when it met a base woman,
It tore the cloak, not caring if it were stolen.
Remaining to mourn: would we hadn't parted!
فارقـتُـهُI parted from it حيـنwhen التقىit met بدَميمةٍwith an ugly woman
وبَقيتُand I remained أنـعيْI lament: ليتَنـاif only we لمnot نَفــترِقْwe had parted
I parted from it when it met an ugly woman,
And I kept lamenting: if only we had not parted.
