Familiarity with toil is the camel’s hallmark.
Endurance is the camel's pride
A patient disposition is the camel’s dignity.
Patience is the camel's stately stride
صامتsilent الأخفافthe padded feet يمشىwalks ماضياonward
صامت الأخفاف يمشى ماضيا
زورقاa boat فيin البيدthe wastes يسرىjourneys by night هادياcalmly
زورقا في البيد يسرى هاديا
Its padded feet silent, it walks onward,
Silent hooves tread steadily on
A boat in the wastes, journeying calmly by night.
Like a boat gently gliding along
نقشتengraved وجهthe face of الصحارىthe deserts أرجلهits feet
نقشت وجه الصحارى أرجله
شادرshunning النومsleep قليلاlittle أكلهits eating
شادر النوم قليلا أكله
Its feet have engraved the face of the deserts.
His feet etched the desert sands
Shunning sleep, it eats but little.
Drowsing, eating little, he stands
ثملاintoxicated يختالstruts تحتbeneath المحملthe litter
ثملا يختال تحت المحمل
راقصاdancing يقدمadvances شطرtoward المنزلthe destination
راقصا يقدم شطر المنزل
Intoxicated, it struts beneath the litter,
Swaying under his load
Dancing, it advances toward its destination.
Dancing, carrying halfway down the road
فيacross المدىthe expanse منthan راكبيهits riders أصبرmore patient
في المدى من راكبيه أصبر
هائمenamored بالسيرwith travel عجباproudly يخطرstrides
هائم بالسير عجبا يخطر
Across the expanse, it is more patient than its riders.
Of all riders, most patient is he
Enamored of travel, it strides with pride.
Pondering on, wandering free
فاحملso bear الفرضthe duty قوياstrongly لاdo not تهابfear
فاحمل الفرض قويا لا تهاب
وارجونand earnestly hope منfrom عندهHis presence حسنgoodness of المآبthe return
وارجون من عنده حسن المآب
So bear your duty with strength; do not fear.
Bear your burden staunch, fear no fall
And earnestly hope for a good return from Him.
Trust in Him who ordains all
اجهدنstrive earnestly فيin طاعةobedience ياO ذاpossessor of الخسارloss
اجهدن في طاعة يا ذا الخسار
فمنfor from الجبرcompulsion سيبدوwill emerge الاختيارfree choice
فمن الجبر سيبدو الاختيار
Strive earnestly in obedience, O you who are at a loss.
Struggle to obey, O unfortunate one
For from compulsion, free choice will emerge.
Through destiny, choice will be won
بامتثالby obeying الأمرthe command يعلوrises منwhoever رسبsank
بامتثال الأمر يعلو من رسب
وهوىand fell الطاغيthe rebel ولوand even though كانhe was اللهبflame
وهوى الطاغي ولو كان اللهب
Through obeying the command, whoever has sunk rises.
By obeying command you will rise over low
And the rebel fell, even though he was flame.
Though desire burns hot as a glow
سخرsubdued الأفلاكthe celestial spheres فيthrough همتهhis resolve
سخر الأفلاك في همته
منhe who ثوىdwelt فيwithin القيدthe fetter منof شرعتهHis law
من ثوى في القيد من شرعته
He subdued the celestial spheres through his resolve—
He hath harnessed the spheres to His will
He who dwelt within the bonds of His law.
He who shelters in shackles from His way still
قدhas سرىtraveled by night النجمthe star يؤمheads toward المنزلاthe station
قد سرى النجم يؤم المنزلا
طوعin obedience to قانونa law لهto it قدhas ذللاbeen made submissive
طوع قانون له قد ذللا
The star has traveled by night, heading for its station,
The stars march on guided by laws
Obeying a law to which it has been made submissive.
Made submissive to His mighty cause
ونماand grew العشبthe grass بقانونby the law of النماءgrowth
ونما العشب بقانون النماء
فاذاbut if ماever حادstrays يجفىis forsaken بالعراءin the open
فاذا ما حاد يجفى بالعراء
And the grass grew by the law of growth;
The grasses grow by laws of growth
But if it ever strays, it is forsaken in the open.
Else they wither, forsaken and loth
ولهيبand a flame دائمperpetual دينthe creed of الشقيقthe anemone
ولهيب دائم دين الشقيق
دمهits blood منfrom ذاكthat يسريflows فيthrough العروقthe veins
دمه من ذاك يسري في العروق
And perpetual flame is the anemone’s creed;
Love's flame forever burns in the heart's core
From that, its blood flows through the veins.
From that fount blood through veins will pour
يربطbinds الذراتthe atoms قانونthe law of الوصالunion
يربط الذرات قانون الوصال
فهيso they are بحرsea وهيand they are برland باتصالthrough connection
فهي بحر وهي بر باتصال
The law of union binds the atoms;
Atoms are bound by laws of attraction
So they are sea, and they are land, through connection.
So sea and land merge in bonded interaction
كلevery شيءthing فيهwithin it قانونa law سرىhas coursed
كل شيء فيه قانون سرى
كيفhow فيabout هذيthese المعانيideas يمترىbe doubted
كيف في هذي المعاني يمترى
A law runs through everything.
In all things a mystery law flows
How can these ideas be doubted?
How then can unguided man suppose
ارجعنdo return ياO حرfree one دستورa code قديمancient
ارجعن يا حر دستور قديم
زيننdo adorn رجلكyour foot بالقيدwith the fetter الوسيمhandsome
زينن رجلك بالقيد الوسيم
Return, O free one, to an ancient code;
Return, O free soul, to ancient trod
Adorn your foot with the handsome fetter.
Adorn your legs with the graceful shackle of God
