A keen-edged arrow said on the day of battle,
A keen-pointed arrow spoke on the day of the fray.
It said to the sword, while war blazed:
It said to the sword, while war blazed:
ياO منyou who الجنةParadise فيin أعطافهits flanks

“O you who bear Paradise within your folds,
O you in whose flanks Paradise dwells,
Dhu al-Fiqar, the keen blade, is among your forebears.
Keen-edged Dhu al-Fiqar is among your forebears.

You accompanied Khalid as he cleft the battle ranks,
You accompanied Khalid as he cleft the host,
And over Syria you scattered the crimson twilight.
And over al-Sham you scattered the twilight glow.

The fire of God’s conquering power burns in your essence,
The fire of God's subduing might is in your essence;
And the Garden of Paradise is the refuge at your back.
The Garden of Paradise is your shadow's abode.
إننيindeed I فيin الجوthe air أوor فيin جعبتيmy quiver
حيثماwherever كنتI was بجسميin my body شعلتيmy flame
As for me, whether aloft or in my quiver,
Indeed, whether in the air or in my quiver,
Wherever I may be, my body holds my flame.
Wherever I am, my flame is in my body.
وإذاand when القوسthe bow رمتنيshot me للثبورtoward destruction

And when the bow hurls me toward destruction,
And when the bow shoots me toward destruction,
My eye peers into the recesses of breasts.
My eye sees into the recesses of chests.
إنif خلاwas empty الصدرthe breast منof القلبthe heart السليمsound

If a breast is empty of a sound heart,
If the breast lacks a sound heart—
It holds neither despair nor lingering fear.
One in which neither despair nor abiding fear dwells—

The arrowhead passes through the bones,
The arrowhead pierces through the bones,
And I clothe the body in armor made of blood.
So I clothe the body in armor of blood.
وإذاand if حلاهadorned it قلبa heart مؤمنbelieving

But when a believer’s heart adorns it,
But if a believing heart adorns it—
Its manifest light shines from what lies hidden.
Its outward light comes from what it holds within—

My spirit melts before a heart ablaze,
My spirit melts before a heart aflame,
And my arrowhead streams like drops of dew.”
And my arrowhead drips like drops of dew.
