Al-Siddiq appeared to me in a dream,

My friend appeared to me in a dream

The dust at his feet blossoming through him.

Blossoming, the dust of his feet

ذا أمن الناس فينا من جلا

ذا أمن الناس فينا من جلا

طورنا منه الكليم الأولا

طورنا منه الكليم الأولا

This most generous of men among us, through whom was illumined

When people felt safe with us

Our Sinai by the first one who spoke with God.

We picked from it the first word

هو ثاني اثنين في الدين وفي

هو ثاني اثنين في الدين وفي

صحبة الغار وفي القبر الوفي

صحبة الغار وفي القبر الوفي

He is the second of two in faith and in

He is the second of two in religion and in

The companionship of the cave, and in the grave—the faithful one.

The cave's company and the loyal grave

قلت يا صفوة أصحاب الصفاء

قلت يا صفوة أصحاب الصفاء

مطلع الديوان من أهل الوفاء

مطلع الديوان من أهل الوفاء

I said: O choicest of the pure-hearted companions,

I said O quintessence of pure companions

Opening verse in the anthology of the faithful,

The first page of the book of loyal ones

بك قر الأس في بنياننا

بك قر الأس في بنياننا

فانظرن ما الطب من أدوائنا

فانظرن ما الطب من أدوائنا

Through you the foundation of our edifice stood firm.

With you the peg settled in our structure

So consider: what is the cure for our ailments?

So look at the cure for our remedies

قال حتام أسير الوهم

قال حتام أسير الوهم

سورة الإخلاص برء السقم

سورة الإخلاص برء السقم

He said: How long will you remain captive to illusion?

He said enough prisoner of illusion

Surah al-Ikhlas is the cure for sickness,

Surat Al-Ikhlas heals the sickness

نفس في كل صدر جائل

نفس في كل صدر جائل

وهي للتوحيد سر هائل

وهي للتوحيد سر هائل

A breath stirring in every breast,

A soul in every chest wavering

And it is an awe-inspiring mystery of divine oneness.

And it is for oneness an immense secret

فاجل هذا السر في كل الفعال

فاجل هذا السر في كل الفعال

ولتكن منه مثالا للجمال

ولتكن منه مثالا للجمال

So reveal this mystery in every deed,

So postpone this secret in all deeds

And through it, become an exemplar of beauty.

And make it an example of beauty

الذي سماك عبدا مسلما

الذي سماك عبدا مسلما

بك للوحدة في الدنيا سما

بك للوحدة في الدنيا سما

He who called you a Muslim servant

He who named you a Muslim servant

Raised you up for unity in the world.

With you for oneness in the world a rising

قلت أفغان وترك وعجم

قلت أفغان وترك وعجم

لم تزل عما تعودت القدم

لم تزل عما تعودت القدم

You spoke of Afghans, Turks, and Persians;

I said alas and left and foreign

Your foot has not left its accustomed ways.

You did not stop what the foot got used to

طهرن الحق من هذي السمات

طهرن الحق من هذي السمات

اقصد البحر وخل القنوات

اقصد البحر وخل القنوات

Cleanse the Truth of these labels;

Purify us, O Truth, from these traits

Make for the sea, and leave the canals behind.

Head for the sea and leave the canals

يا أسيرا لسمات ويحكا

يا أسيرا لسمات ويحكا

قد بعدت اليوم من دوحتكا

قد بعدت اليوم من دوحتكا

O captive of labels, alas for you!

O prisoner of traits, woe to you

Today you are far removed from your spreading tree.

Today you have gone far from your farm

أبدل الوحدة بالتثنية

أبدل الوحدة بالتثنية

لا تقطع صاح حبل الوحدة

لا تقطع صاح حبل الوحدة

Substitute unity for duality;

Replace oneness with duality

Do not sever, friend, the cord of unity.

Do not cut the cord of oneness

عابد الواحد وحد واهجرن

عابد الواحد وحد واهجرن

كل تفريق وللحق ارجعن

كل تفريق وللحق ارجعن

Worshipper of the One, unite and abandon

Worshipper of the One, unify and abandon

Every division, and return to the Truth.

All division and to the Truth return

أيها المغفل معنى الكلم

أيها المغفل معنى الكلم

أثبتن في القلب ألفاظ الفم

أثبتن في القلب ألفاظ الفم

O you who neglect the meaning of words,

O oblivious one the word's meaning

Fix firmly in the heart the words of the mouth.

Confirm in the heart the mouth's words

أمة قطعتها في أمم

أمة قطعتها في أمم

وهدمت الحصن فيه تحتمى

وهدمت الحصن فيه تحتمى

You have split one community into many communities,

A nation You split into nations

And demolished the fortress in which you take shelter.

And You demolished the fortress it seeks refuge in

أمة الإيمان زد بالعمل

أمة الإيمان زد بالعمل

مات إيمان إذا لم يعمل

مات إيمان إذا لم يعمل

Increase the community of faith through action;

The nation of faith, increase with action

Faith dies when it does not act.

Faith dies if there is no action
