The community's bosom is mercy for the individual.

His essence is complete within the community.

فالزمن الجمع جهد المستطاع

في ذرا الأحرار كن مثل الشعاع

في ذرا الأحرار كن مثل الشعاع

So cling to the collective with all your strength.

On the heights of the free, be like a ray of light.

واحفظن ما قاله خير البشر

واحفظن ما قاله خير البشر

كل شيطان من الجمع نفر

كل شيطان من الجمع نفر

And remember what the best of humankind said:

Every devil flees from the collective.

فردنا مرآته أمته

فردنا مرآته أمته

وكذا مرآتها صورته

وكذا مرآتها صورته

Our individual's mirror is his community.

And likewise, his image is its mirror.

وهما سلك نظام ودرر

وهما سلك نظام ودرر

أو نجوم تتجلى في النهر

أو نجوم تتجلى في النهر

And the two are an ordering thread and pearls,

Or stars shining forth in the river.

قيمة الأفراد جدوى الملة

ومن الأفراد نظم الأمة

ومن الأفراد نظم الأمة

The worth of individuals is the community's bounty.

And from individuals comes the community's order.

وإذا الواحد في الجمع نما

وإذا الواحد في الجمع نما

كان كالقطرة صارت خضرما

كان كالقطرة صارت خضرما

And when the individual grows within the collective,

He is like a drop that has become a vast sea.

جمع الماضي له في لبه

جمع الماضي له في لبه

والتقى الغابر والآتي به

والتقى الغابر والآتي به

The past is gathered for him within his core,

And past and future meet in him.

صلة الأمس تراه والغد

صلة الأمس تراه والغد

وقته لا ينتهي كالأبد

وقته لا ينتهي كالأبد

You see him as the link between yesterday and tomorrow.

His time has no end, like eternity.

هو بالأمة قلب طامح

هو بالأمة قلب طامح

وهو بالأمة سعي رابح

وهو بالأمة سعي رابح

Through the community, he is an aspiring heart.

And through the community, he is fruitful striving.

روحه من قومه والبدن

سره من قومه والعلن

His spirit and body come from his people.

His hidden and outward life come from his people.

بلسان القوم يشدو منطقا

بلسان القوم يشدو منطقا

ومن الأسلاف يقفو طرقا

ومن الأسلاف يقفو طرقا

He sings his words in the tongue of his people,

And follows paths inherited from his forebears.

تنضج الفطرة فيه الصحبة

تنضج الفطرة فيه الصحبة

فتراه الفرد وهو الأمة

فتراه الفرد وهو الأمة

Companionship ripens his innate nature within him.

So you see him as the individual, yet he is the community.

يحكم الوحدة فيه الكثرة

يحكم الوحدة فيه الكثرة

وهي بالوحدة فيه وحدة

وهي بالوحدة فيه وحدة

Multiplicity makes unity firm within him,

And through unity it is oneness within him.

أفرد اللفظ من البيت ترى

جوهر المعنى لديه انكسرا

Isolate the word from the verse, and you will see

The essence of meaning shattered within it.

تسقط الأوراق من غصن ينيع

فترى محرومة وصل الربيع

Leaves fall from a flourishing branch,

And you see them deprived of spring's embrace.

طفئت أنغام أعواد غناء

طفئت أنغام أعواد غناء

فاتها من زمزم الأمة ماء

فاتها من زمزم الأمة ماء

The melodies of singing lutes are quenched;

Water from the community's Zamzam has passed them by.

يحرم الفرد الوحيد المقصدا

يحرم الفرد الوحيد المقصدا

فترى نظم قواه بددا

فترى نظم قواه بددا

The solitary individual is denied his goal,

So you see his ordered powers scattered.

تجمع الأمة شمل المنة

تجمع الأمة شمل المنة

فيه تحبوه عظيم الهمة

فيه تحبوه عظيم الهمة

The community gathers strength together

Within him, granting him lofty resolve.

نشأت بالقيد حرا مطلقا

نشأت بالقيد حرا مطلقا

أثبتت في الأرض سروا بسقا

أثبتت في الأرض سروا بسقا

Through restraint it raised him free and unfettered.

It rooted in the earth a cypress that rose tall.

ظبيه الوثاب مسكا يعبق

إن حواه من نظام وهق

His leaping gazelle is fragrant with musk,

If a noose of order holds it fast.

أنت لم تعرف خودى من بيخودى

أنت لا ريب من الشك ردى

أنت لا ريب من الشك ردى

You have not distinguished selfhood (khudi) from selflessness (bikhudi).

You are, beyond doubt, undone by doubt.

إن في طينك نوراً قد بدا

بشعاع منه أبصرت الهدى

بشعاع منه أبصرت الهدى

Indeed, a light has appeared within your clay.

By a ray from it, you have seen the right way.

كل غم ورضا من دروته

كل غم ورضا من دروته

أنت حي بتوالي ثورته

أنت حي بتوالي ثورته

Every sorrow and contentment comes from its summit.

You are alive through its successive upheavals.

أنت منه أنت حقا وأنا

أنت منه أنت حقا وأنا

أنا وهو الفرد لا يرضى ثنا

أنا وهو الفرد لا يرضى ثنا

Through it, you are truly you, and I

Am I; and it is the unique one, admitting no duality.

يخلق النفس ويذرو ويقر

يخلق النفس ويذرو ويقر

ذو دلال في خضوع مستتر

ذو دلال في خضوع مستتر

It creates the self, scatters it, and establishes it.

Possessed of proud charm, concealed in submission.

يأسر الشعلة هذا الشرر

لهب من حره مستعر

لهب من حره مستعر

These sparks take the flame captive;

A flame blazes from its heat.

حرة رهن قيود فطرته

حرة رهن قيود فطرته

جزؤه بالكل حاطت قوته

جزؤه بالكل حاطت قوته

Free, yet hostage to the fetters of its nature;

Its part has strength that encompasses the whole.

لكفاح دائم تنزو قواه

هو يسمى الذات أو يسمى الحياه

Its powers leap toward unceasing struggle.

It is called the self, or it is called life.

يستثير الحرب في جلوته

حين يبدي النفس من خلوته

حين يبدي النفس من خلوته

It stirs up war in its manifestation,

When it reveals the self from its seclusion.

يقطع الجبر عليه الطرقا

يقطع الجبر عليه الطرقا

وله بالحب فرع سمقا

وله بالحب فرع سمقا

Determinism cuts off its paths,

And through love it has a branch that rises high.

تتشظى الذات في أمتها

تتشظى الذات في أمتها

لترى الروضة من زهرتها

لترى الروضة من زهرتها

The self splinters within its community,

So you may see the garden through its flower.
