You sent my way—may God grant you more—from
your sweet torrent, pearls of verse.
سَرَّحْتُI let roam طَرْفيmy gaze مِنْهُfrom it فيin جَنَّةٍa garden

I let my gaze roam through a garden within it
no lovely pavilion could rival in beauty.
نَظَمْتَyou composed ماthat which يَقْصُرُfalls short عَنْof شَأْوِهِits reach
مِنْfrom غَيْرِهِother than it القَوْلُspeech الطَّويلُlong العَريضْbroad
You composed verse beyond the reach
of other speech, however long and broad.
فَدُمْتَso may you continue تُحْييyou revive للعُلَىfor glory مَرْبعاًan abode
فَمرْبَعُfor the abode العِلْمِof learning كَسِيرٌbroken مَهِيضْbroken anew
So may you ever keep an abode for glory alive,
for learning’s abode lies broken and shattered.
