قُلْsay لِعَلِيٍّto Ali نَالاhe attained
مِنْfrom رَبِّهِhis Lord الإقْبالاfavor
Say to Ali, who has attained
favor from his Lord:
قَدْindeed فَتَحَopened up اللهُGod لَهُfor him
بالفَهْمِthrough understanding ماwhat أَعْضَلَهbaffled him
God has opened up for him,
through understanding, what had baffled him.
وفَتْحُand the opening of هَذاthis البَابِthe door
هُوit is هِبَةُthe gift of الوَهّابِthe Bestower
And the opening of this door
is the gift of the Bestower.
وَسَائِرُand the rest of العُلُومِthe branches of learning
يَسيرةُeasy الْمَفْهُومِto comprehend
And the other branches of learning
are easy to comprehend.
فَبَعْدَfor after فَهْمِunderstanding النّحْوِgrammar
لِكُلِّfor every عِلْمٍfield of learning يَحْويhe masters
For, after understanding grammar,
he masters every field of learning.
فَكَيْفَso how لاnot وَقَدْwhen indeed غَداhe has become
فيin غَيْرِهِother than it مُسَدّداproficient
How could he not, when he has become
proficient in other fields?
فيon جُمْلَةِall of الآلاتِthe auxiliary disciplines
قَدْindeed أنْفَقَhe spent الساعاتِthe hours
On all the auxiliary disciplines
he has spent hours,
حَتّىuntil غَداhe became مَذْكُراwell known
بماfor what حَوَىhe had mastered مَشْهُوراfamous
until he became well known,
famous for what he had mastered.
وَقَارَبَand he approached الكَمالاperfection
وزَاحَمَand he rivaled الرِّجالاthe men
And he approached perfection,
and rivaled men of learning,
وَفيand in سِماتٍtraits رائِقَهpleasing
with outstanding qualities
and with pleasing traits:
نَجَابَةًnobility ودِيناand piety
وَهِمَّةًand high resolve وَزَيْناand grace
nobility and piety,
and high resolve and grace.
وَصَارَand he became بَدْراًa full moon فيin العُلَىthe heights
وَزِينَةًand an ornament بَيْنَamong الْمَلاthe assembly
And he became a full moon in the heights,
and an ornament among the assembly.
غَدَاhas become عَلَيْهِfor him النَّومُsleep
غَلاgrew costly عَلَيْهِfor him السَّوْمُthe asking price
Sleep has become for him
a costly bargain.
ماnot هَذِهِthis رُطُوبَهْdampness
بَلْrather هَذِهِthis أُعْجُوبَهْa marvel
This is no mere dampness;
rather, this is a marvel!
فيduring غَالِبِmost of النَّهارِthe day
يَنامُhe sleeps لاnot يُمَارِيhe disputes
For most of the day
he sleeps, and does not deny it.
فَأَيْنَwhere then أَيْنَwhere الهِمَّهْresolve
إنْif كانَthere is مِنْهاof it شَمَّهْa whiff
Where, then, where is his resolve,
if there is so much as a whiff of it?
وَهَلْand is there لَهُfor him منany مثْلequal
فيin مِثْلthe like of هَذَاthis يَفْعَلhe does
And has he any equal
in doing the like of this?
وهَلْand is there لَهُfor him مِنْany عَزْمَهْfirm resolve
يَكُونُhe might be فيهاin it خَيْثَمَهKhaythamah
And has he any firm resolve
in which he might be a Khaythamah?
فإنَّfor indeed ذاthis يَسْرِيit leads إلَىto
فَسادِcorruption of عَقْلِthe intellect of العُقَلاthe wise
For this leads to
corruption of the minds of the wise,
ويُنْحِلثand emaciates الأَجْساماbodies
ويَبْعَثْand brings on الآلاماpains
and wastes away bodies,
and brings on pains,
يُصَفّرُit yellows الأَلْواناcomplexions
ويُمْرِضُand sickens الأَبْداناbodies
turns complexions yellow,
and makes bodies ill.
فَهَلْso, does...? يَبيعُhe sells علْمَهُhis knowledge
وعَقْلَهُand his mind وجِسْمَهُand his body
Will he, then, sell his knowledge,
and his mind and his body,
بِهَذِهِfor this الأُضْحوكهْabsurdity
ومِثْلِand the like of هَذيthis النَّوكهْfolly
for this absurdity
and folly such as this?
