صَيَّرتyou made دَمعيmy tears مِثلَlike خدِّكَyour cheek أَحمَراred
وَتَركتَand you left لَونيmy complexion مِثلَlike ثوبِكَyour robe أصفَراyellow
You made my tears red like your cheek.
You made my tears the color of your cheeks, red
And left my complexion yellow like your robe.
And left my complexion the color of your robe, yellow
وَحَللتَand you entered قَلباًa heart كانَwas قَبلكَbefore you يابِساًdry
فَزَهاso it flourished وَأَضحىand became مِنthrough حلولِكَyour dwelling within أَخضَراgreen
And you entered a heart that was dry before you;
And turned a heart that was dry before you
So it flourished and, through your presence, turned green.
Green and lively with your presence
ياO شاهِراًone brandishing سَيفَthe sword اللَّواحِظِsidelong glances فيin الحَشاthe innermost heart
صَيَّرتَyou made قَلبيmy heart شُهرَةًan object of fame بَينَamong الوَرىhumankind
O you who brandish the sword of glances in my breast,
O you who unsheathe the sword of glances in battle
You made my heart famous among humankind.
You made my heart famous amongst people
وَهَزَزتَand you swayed قَدّاًa form كَالغُصونِlike branches بلينهِin its suppleness
لَكِنّهُbut it فيin الطَّعنpiercing يَحكيresembles الأسمَراthe brown spear
And you swayed a form as supple as branches,
And shook a slender body like swaying branches
Yet in piercing it resembles the brown spear.
Yet in stabbing it tells of darkness
رِفقاًbe gentle بِصبٍّwith a lovesick lover ذابَmelted فيكَfor you صَبابةًwith ardent longing
حَتّىuntil غَداhe became بَينَamong البريّةِhumankind لاnot يُرىis seen
Be gentle with a lover who melted in longing for you,
Be gentle with a youth who melted in you to liquid
Until he could no longer be seen among humankind.
Until he disappeared amongst the wilderness, unseen
وَاِكسِرْand break بِمَورِدِwith the spring of فيكَyour mouth أَفعالَthe effects of الصدَاthirst
مِنfrom قَلبِthe heart of صَبٍّa lovesick lover كانَwas قَبلَكَbefore you مصدَراa wellspring
And with the spring of your mouth, undo thirst's effects
And break with your actions the firmness of old ways
From a lover's heart that was a wellspring before you.
From the heart of a youth who before you was steadfast
بِالرّوحِwith my soul as ransom مِنfrom خَدَّيكَyour two cheeks أَخضرgreen عارضٍcheek-down
وافىcame to الورودَthe roses وَمُقلتيand my eye قَدalready أَمطَراrained
I would give my soul for the green down upon your cheeks;
With the spirit from your cheeks, green and rosy
It has reached the roses, and my eye has rained.
He came to the roses and my eyes rained
