لَمّاwhen بَدَتshe appeared بَينَamong أَهلِpeople of الحُسنbeauty قَدindeed سلِبواthey were stripped of
لَمّا بَدَت بَينَ أَهلِ الحُسن قَد سلِبوا
جَمالَهمtheir beauty فَاِغتَدواso they became لاno حسنَbeauty لاno خَفراbashfulness
جَمالَهم فَاِغتَدوا لا حسنَ لا خَفرا
When she appeared among the beautiful, they were stripped
When among people of beauty they seemed to lose
Of their beauty, and so were left with neither beauty nor bashfulness.
The beauty they possessed, owning now no grace or charm,
كَأَنَّهاas though she were الشّمسُthe sun إِذwhen لاno غَيمَcloud يَحجِبُهاveils her
كَأَنَّها الشّمسُ إِذ لا غَيمَ يَحجِبُها
وَهُمand they لَدَيهاbeside her نَهاراًin daylight أَشبَهواthey resembled القَمراthe moon
وَهُم لَدَيها نَهاراً أَشبَهوا القَمرا
She was like the sun when no cloud veils her,
She was as the unveil'd sun, whom clouds do not disguise,
And beside her, in daylight, they resembled the moon.
And they beside her brightness were as moons that night makes dim.
