الوردُthe rose قَدindeed قالَsaid إِذwhen قُمناwe set about نُقَطِّرهُwe distill it
الوردُ قَد قالَ إِذ قُمنا نُقَطِّرهُ
ماwhat بالُكُمis the matter with you تَأخُذونَyou take النّفْسَthe soul وَالنّفَساand the breath
ما بالُكُم تَأخُذونَ النّفْسَ وَالنّفَسا
The rose said as we set about distilling it:
The rose said, as we plucked it:
“Why do you take away both soul and breath?
"Why do you take my life, breath by breath?
غَيريsomeone other than me حَبيبٌbeloved لَكُمto you تُعطونَهُyou give him مُهجاًsouls
غَيري حَبيبٌ لَكُم تُعطونَهُ مُهجاً
وَدامَand continued يَلحَقُنيto befall me مِنكُمfrom you أَذىًharm وَأَسَىand sorrow
وَدامَ يَلحَقُني مِنكُم أَذىً وَأَسَى
Another is dear to you; you give him your souls,
Another beloved you have, whom you give your love -
Yet harm and sorrow from you have kept befalling me.”
Yet still I'm met with harm and sorrow from you."
