بَداappeared علىupon نارِfire خَدَّيْهِhis two cheeks نَدىdew عَرَقٍsweat
لوْif ذاقَهُtasted it مُغْرَمٌa lovesick lover يَشْفىwould be healed مِنَof الوَصَبِaffliction
The dew of sweat appeared upon the fire of his cheeks.
The dew of sweat appeared on his blushing cheeks,
If a lovesick lover tasted it, he would be cured of pain.
If a lovesick one tasted it, it would cure all ailments.
فقُلْتُso I said قَدْindeed سالَflowed مِثْلlike الدُّرِّpearls مُنتَظِماًstrung in order
نَظْمَthe stringing of العُقودِnecklaces علىupon ذاthis الجَمْرِthe glowing coals واللَّهَبِand the flame
So I said: it has flowed like pearls, strung in order,
So I said, it flowed evenly like pearls,
As necklaces are strung, upon this glowing coal and flame.
The way pearls are strung on a necklace over embers and flames.
كأنَّas though صُغْرَىthe smaller وكُبْرىand the larger مِنْamong فَواقِعِهِits bubbles
As though the smaller and larger of its bubbles
As if the brightest and dullest of its beads,
Were pebbles of pearl upon a ground of gold.
Were pearls of gold on a ground of gold.
