The choicest of the beauties is the one I fell in love with.
The sailor's eye whom I've fallen for
But he paid no attention to me.
Yet he showed no attention towards me
عَينٌan eye بَدَتappeared عاذِلَتيmy female reprover خَلفهاbehind it
عَينٌ بَدَت عاذِلَتي خَلفها
ياah لَيتَهاwould that she مِنfrom غَيرِwithout عينٍan eye وَذاتand a self
يا لَيتَها مِن غَيرِ عينٍ وَذات
An eye appeared, with my reprover behind it.
An eye that seemed to blame me behind it
Ah, would that she were without an eye or a self!
Oh, if only it were not an eye or being
