الطَّيرُthe birds ياO صاحfriend
فيin أَيكِthe groves of الرّبىthe hills قَدhave صاحcried out
The birds, O friend,
The bird, O friend
Have cried out in the groves of the hills.
In your bosom has cried out
وَالصَّبُّand the lovesick lover قَدhas نَاحwailed
مِنfrom حَيثwhere الحَمامthe doves قَدhave نَاحcooed mournfully
And the lovesick lover has wailed
And passion has lamented
From where the doves have cooed mournfully.
From where the dove has cried out
وَالدَّمعُand the tears قَدhave سَاحflowed
إِذwhen هامgrew mad with love المُعنّىthe tormented lover ساحwandered
And the tears have flowed
And tears have flowed
When the tormented lover, crazed with love, wandered.
When meaning has wandered
وَالعَقلُand reason قَدhas راحdeparted
مِنfrom شُربِdrinking اللّمىdusky lips مَعwith رَاحwine
And reason has departed
And reason has departed
From drinking of dusky lips along with wine.
From drinking liquor with the zephyr
