وَاعَدنيpromised me الحِبُّthe beloved بِوَصليto join me سَاعَةًfor an hour
وَاعَدني الحِبُّ بِوَصلي سَاعَةً
وَقالَand he said لِلوَعدِto the promise أَفيI shall be true يقيناcertainly
وَقالَ لِلوَعدِ أَفي يقينا
The beloved promised to join me for an hour,
Love promised me a reunion one day
And said, 'I shall surely be true to the promise.'
And commanded the promise to come true
فَكُلّماso whenever طالَبتهI pressed him كَرّرهُhe repeated it
فَكُلّما طالَبته كَرّرهُ
وَماand did not وَفىhe fulfill وَقَدand already مَضىhad passed سنوناyears
وَما وَفى وَقَد مَضى سنونا
So whenever I pressed him for it, he repeated it,
Yet whenever I asked, it was put off
And he did not keep it, though years had passed.
Though years have passed, still it has not come through
وَقالَand he said ليto me اِصطَبِرbe patient مَضىhas passed وَعدٌa promise وذاand this one
وَقالَ لي اِصطَبِر مَضى وَعدٌ وذا
فَقُلتُso I said مرَّhad passed قَبلَهُbefore it سَبعوناseventy
فَقُلتُ مرَّ قَبلَهُ سَبعونا
And he told me, 'Be patient: a promise has passed, and this one too.'
Love said: "Have patience, one promise passed will come anew"
So I said, 'Seventy had passed before it.'
I said: "Before it seventy more have passed and flew"
