فمَنso whoever شَبَّهَlikened البَحرِيَّal-Bahri بِالبَحرِto the sea مُخطئٌmistaken
فمَن شَبَّهَ البَحرِيَّ بِالبَحرِ مُخطئٌ
وَلَيسَand there is no لِذاto this التشبيهcomparison عنديwith me اِلْتِفاتُheed
وَلَيسَ لِذا التشبيه عندي اِلْتِفاتُ
So whoever likens al-Bahri to the sea is mistaken.
Whoever compares the sailor to the sea is wrong;
And I pay no heed to this comparison.
I pay no heed to such a simile.
فَذلِكَfor that one مِلحُsalty الطعمِthe taste مُرٌّbitter مَذاقُهُits flavor
فَذلِكَ مِلحُ الطعمِ مُرٌّ مَذاقُهُ
وَهَذاand this one عذيبُsweet الفَضلِbounty حُلوٌsweet فُراتُrefreshingly sweet
وَهَذا عذيبُ الفَضلِ حُلوٌ فُراتُ
For that is salty to the taste, bitter in flavor;
For the former is salt, bitter to taste,
And this one is sweet in bounty, sweet and refreshing.
While the latter is fresh, sweet Euphrates.
