سَقَتنيshe gave me to drink سُلافاًchoicest wine مِنfrom مُدامَةِwine ثَغرِهاher mouth
عَلىamid وَردِroses خَدَّيهاher two cheeks وَنَرجِسِand narcissus طرفِهاher gaze
She gave me the choicest wine from the vintage of her lips,
She gave me a draught from the wine of her mouth
Amid the roses of her cheeks and the narcissus of her gaze.
Upon the rose of her cheek and the narcissus of her glance,
وَقَدand indeed سامَرتنيshe conversed with me اللَّيلَthe night تَرشفنيshe lets me sip طُلىwine
حَديثٍconversation فَماso not لَذّwas sweet المدامُthe wine بِصَرفِهاin its unmixed state
And she conversed with me through the night, letting me sip the wine
And the night has conversed with me, sprinkling me with the stars
Of conversation; unmixed wine held no delight.
Of a conversation, so the wine was no match for her turning away,
وَماand not ذُقتI tasted مِنof هَذاthis وَلاnor ذاthat وَإِنّماbut only
تخيلهُconjures it الأَفكارُthoughts فيin حُسنِthe beauty of وَصفِهاdescribing her
Yet I tasted neither this nor that; rather,
And I have not tasted this or that, rather
Thoughts merely conjure it in a beautiful description of her.
It is imagined by thoughts in the beauty of her description.
