وفُتِّ كئيباً يموت هياما
O pale camels of the Hijaz, you carried the noble ones,
The carrier camels of Hejaz bore honors,
and left behind a sorrowful man dying of love's frenzy.
While the dovelike one dies of love-sickness.

You journeyed swiftly by night, driven by longing, in earnest,
You walked fast to meet the beloved seriously,
so passion stirred the blaze within my heart.
So love stirred strongly in my heart.

Why did you not take your time when setting out,
Why didn't you walk slowly
for an ardent lover whom separation clothed in sickness?
For a lover dressed in separation's garb?

He moans a moan that softens rocks,
He moans a soft moan to soften the rocks,
and his moaning makes the doves weep for him.
And the doves weep over him.

He loved wakefulness and hated sleep.

لِكَونِ امَّنام عَلَيهِ حَراما
He regards sleeplessness in love as a duty upon him,
He sees staying up for love an obligation,
since sleep is forbidden to him.
For sleep on him became prohibited.

And my night has no dawn that gleams;
The long night has no morning shining,
so has dawn sworn never to be seen?
As if dawn swore to never rise!

The lantern pours its light on
the armies of darkness—black warriors—a keen sword.
The armies of darkness, its piercing sword.

So alas for my heart, as the fire of heartache
Oh how my heart burns with love's fire,
burns ever hotter and grows more fiercely ablaze.
Growing ever more aflame!

Separation kindles love within my heart,
Passion flares up in my love-sick heart,
and separation surely stirs passion.
And passion always ignites love.

I turn my face to welcome
I turn my face forward
the breeze of the Hijaz, lavender's nursling.
To scent Hejaz's youthful western breeze.

I desire none but Hejaz,
and my heart inclines toward it, lost in love.
My heart inclines and craves for it.

and indeed I feign blindness to everything else.
Though from all else I'm blind.

I have always gazed eagerly toward its lightning,
I've always craved its lightning
so it might give the lovesick lover a smile of its own.
To smile on me in my time of need.

So, pale camels, may you be brought to your goal,
Oh you carrier, you reached your goal,
and attain a dwelling in the land of the Hijaz.
And gained in Hejaz an abode.

and alight there, and pitch the tents.
And descend, pitching tents by it.
