ألَاLo ياO أَجلَّmost exalted الرُّسلِof the messengers وَالأنبياءِand the prophets
ألَا يا أَجلَّ الرُّسلِ وَالأنبياءِ
وَياand O سَيِّدmaster الساداتِof masters وَالشّفعاءِand intercessors
وَيا سَيِّد الساداتِ وَالشّفعاءِ
O most exalted of messengers and prophets,
O master of masters and intercessors,
وَياand O صَفوَةchosen one اللَّهِof God العظيمِgreat جلالُهis His majesty
وَيا صَفوَة اللَّهِ العظيمِ جلالُه
وَياand O نِعمَةَgift المَولىof the Lord الجليلmagnificent العطاءِin giving
وَيا نِعمَةَ المَولى الجليل العطاءِ
O chosen one of God, whose majesty is great,
O gift of the Lord, magnificent in giving,
وَياand O رَحمَةmercy الرّحمنِof the Merciful لِلخلقِto creation كلِّهمall of them
وَيا رَحمَة الرّحمنِ لِلخلقِ كلِّهم
وَشافِعَهمand their intercessor حَقّاًtruly بِيومِon the Day of الجَزاءِRecompense
وَشافِعَهم حَقّاً بِيومِ الجَزاءِ
O mercy of the Merciful to all creation,
And truly their intercessor on the Day of Recompense,
وَياand O مَنone who هوَis النّورthe light الّذيwhich مِنهُfrom him كُوِّنَتwere formed
وَيا مَن هوَ النّور الّذي مِنهُ كُوِّنَت
عُيونeyes الوّرىof humankind وَالخلقand creation دونَwithout اِمتراءِdoubt
عُيون الوّرى وَالخلق دونَ اِمتراءِ
O you who are the light from which were formed
The eyes of humankind and creation, without doubt.
وَكانَand he was نَبِيّاًa prophet قبلَbefore يوجَدexisted آدمٌAdam
وَكانَ نَبِيّاً قبلَ يوجَد آدمٌ
وَآدمand Adam فيماwhile بَينbetween طينٍclay وماءِand water
وَآدم فيما بَين طينٍ وماءِ
He was a prophet before Adam existed,
While Adam was still between clay and water.
وَأَرسَلَهُand He sent him مَولاهُhis Lord لِلخَلقِto creation كلّهمall of them
وَأَرسَلَهُ مَولاهُ لِلخَلقِ كلّهم
بَشيراًa bearer of glad tidings نَذيراًa warner خاتمlast الأَنبياءِof the prophets
بَشيراً نَذيراً خاتم الأَنبياءِ
His Lord sent him to all creation
As a bearer of glad tidings, a warner, and the last of the prophets.
وَأَيّدهand He supported him بِالمُعجزاتwith miracles أدلّةًas proofs
وَأَيّده بِالمُعجزات أدلّةً
عَلىof بَعثِهِhis mission حقّاًtruly بِدونِwithout اِفتِراءِfabrication
عَلى بَعثِهِ حقّاً بِدونِ اِفتِراءِ
And He supported him with miracles as proofs
Of his true mission, without fabrication.
وَمِنهاand among them كتابthe Book اللَّهof God وَهوَand it is أَجلُّهاtheir greatest
وَمِنها كتاب اللَّه وَهوَ أَجلُّها
كَلامspeech قَديمancient مُعجِزconfounding البلغاءِthe eloquent
كَلام قَديم مُعجِز البلغاءِ
Among them is the Book of God, the greatest of them,
Ancient speech that confounds the eloquent.
فَقَدand indeed عَجزواthey were unable عَنto أَنthat يَجيئواproduce بِمِثلهِits like
فَقَد عَجزوا عَن أَن يَجيئوا بِمِثلهِ
وَهُمْand they حينَئذat that time مِنamong أَفصَحِthe most eloquent الفُصَحاءِspeakers
وَهُمْ حينَئذ مِن أَفصَحِ الفُصَحاءِ
They were unable to produce its like,
Though they were then among the most eloquent speakers.
وَقامَand he rose بِأَمرِat the command of اللَّهِGod يَدعوcalling لِدينهِto His religion
وَقامَ بِأَمرِ اللَّهِ يَدعو لِدينهِ
وَأَظهَرand he brought forth هَذاthis الدّينreligion بَعدَafter الخفاءِconcealment
وَأَظهَر هَذا الدّين بَعدَ الخفاءِ
At God's command he rose to call people to His religion
And brought this religion into the open after its concealment.
وَياand O مَنone whom بِهِwith him أَسرىtook by night الإِلَهGod بليلةٍin a night
وَيا مَن بِهِ أَسرى الإِلَه بليلةٍ
إِلىto المَسجِدِthe mosque الأَقصىthe farthest نعمindeed وَالسّماءِand heaven
إِلى المَسجِدِ الأَقصى نعم وَالسّماءِ
O you whom God took by night
To the Farthest Mosque, and indeed to heaven,
إِلىto الرّفرفِthe rafraf الأَسمىthe highest إِلىto المُستوىthe station كَذاlikewise
إِلى الرّفرفِ الأَسمى إِلى المُستوى كَذا
إِلىto عَرشِthe throne of ربِّthe Lord of العزِّmight وَالكبرياءِand majesty
إِلى عَرشِ ربِّ العزِّ وَالكبرياءِ
To the highest rafraf, and likewise to the appointed station,
To the throne of the Lord of might and majesty,
إِلىto حَضرةِthe presence of الرّحمنِthe Merciful حَضرةِthe presence of قُدسِهِHis holiness
إِلى حَضرةِ الرّحمنِ حَضرةِ قُدسِهِ
فَكانَand he was كَقابَas near as the span of القَوسِthe bow دونَwithout مراءِdispute
فَكانَ كَقابَ القَوسِ دونَ مراءِ
To the presence of the Merciful, His holy presence;
He came as near as the span of a bow, without dispute.
وَخاطبand he addressed مَولاهhis Lord العظيمَgreat كمالهُis His perfection
وَخاطب مَولاه العظيمَ كمالهُ
وَأَثنىand he praised عَلىhis Lord مَولاهthe highest أَسمىpraise of all kinds of praise ثناءِpraise
وَأَثنى عَلى مَولاه أَسمى ثناءِ
He addressed his Lord, whose perfection is great,
And praised his Lord with the highest praise.
وَشاهَدand he beheld مَولاهhis Lord وَقَدand indeed خَرَّhe fell ساجِداًprostrate
وَشاهَد مَولاه وَقَد خَرَّ ساجِداً
وَناداهُand He called to him مَولاهُhis Lord أَجلّmost exalted نداءِcall
وَناداهُ مَولاهُ أَجلّ نداءِ
He beheld his Lord and fell prostrate,
And his Lord called to him with the most exalted call.
وَقالَand He said لَهُto him سَلْask تُعطَyou shall be given وَاِشفعand intercede محمّدٌMuhammad
وَقالَ لَهُ سَلْ تُعطَ وَاِشفع محمّدٌ
تُشفّعyour intercession shall be accepted وَأولاهand He granted him قَبولfulfillment الرّجاءِof hope
تُشفّع وَأولاه قَبول الرّجاءِ
He said to him, 'Ask and you shall be given; intercede, Muhammad,
And your intercession shall be accepted'; He granted him the fulfillment of his hope.
وَأَولاهُand He granted him بِالسّبعِthe seven المَثانيoft-repeated verses تَفَضّلاًgraciously
وَأَولاهُ بِالسّبعِ المَثاني تَفَضّلاً
وَأَولاهُand He granted him رَفعexaltation الذّكرِof remembrance دونَwithout اِمتراءِdoubt
وَأَولاهُ رَفع الذّكرِ دونَ اِمتراءِ
He graciously granted him the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses
And granted him an exalted remembrance, without doubt.
وَمَنَّand He favored عَليهِhim بِاللّواءِwith the banner فَآدمٌand Adam
وَمَنَّ عَليهِ بِاللّواءِ فَآدمٌ
وَمَنand those who دونَهcome after him مِنare among تَحتِbeneath ذاكَthat اللّواءِbanner
وَمَن دونَه مِن تَحتِ ذاكَ اللّواءِ
He favored him with the banner; thus Adam
And those after him are beneath that banner.
وَقَدand indeed عادَhe returned بِالإِجلالِwith honor وَالعزِّand might وَالهَناand joy
وَقَد عادَ بِالإِجلالِ وَالعزِّ وَالهَنا
وَأَلبسهُand He clothed him مَولاهُhis Lord تاجَwith a crown of البهاءِsplendor
وَأَلبسهُ مَولاهُ تاجَ البهاءِ
He returned with honor, might, and joy,
And his Lord clothed him with a crown of splendor.
وَياand O أَشرَفَnoblest الرّسلِof the messengers الكرامِhonored وَخَيرهمand their best
وَيا أَشرَفَ الرّسلِ الكرامِ وَخَيرهم
وَأَفضلهمand their finest ياO سيّدmaster الأَصفياءِof the chosen ones
وَأَفضلهم يا سيّد الأَصفياءِ
O noblest and best of the honored messengers,
And finest of them, O master of the chosen ones,
وَأَنتَand you رَسولُare God's messenger اللّهِnoblest أَكرمُone sent forth مُرسلٍmessenger
وَأَنتَ رَسولُ اللّهِ أَكرمُ مُرسلٍ
وَأَنتَand you حَبيبbeloved اللَّهof God رَبِّLord of السماءِheaven
وَأَنتَ حَبيب اللَّه رَبِّ السماءِ
You are God's messenger, the noblest one sent,
And you are the beloved of God, Lord of heaven.
وَأَنتَand you رَسولmessenger of اللَّهِGod طبَّhealing of قُلوبناour hearts
وَأَنتَ رَسول اللَّهِ طبَّ قُلوبنا
وَأَنتَand you لَهاfor them مَولايmy master خَيرbest دواءِremedy
وَأَنتَ لَها مَولاي خَير دواءِ
You are God's messenger, the healing of our hearts,
And for them, my master, you are the best remedy,
وَعافيةand health الأَجسادِof bodies مِنfrom كلِّevery عِلّةٍillness
وَعافية الأَجسادِ مِن كلِّ عِلّةٍ
وَأَنتَand you لَهاfor them واللَّهby God أَسنىfinest شفاءِcure
وَأَنتَ لَها واللَّه أَسنى شفاءِ
And health for bodies afflicted by every illness;
For them, by God, you are the finest cure.
وَأَنتand you لَناfor us وَاللَّهby God رُكنٌa support وَمَفزعand a refuge
وَأَنت لَنا وَاللَّه رُكنٌ وَمَفزع
إِذاwhen اِشتَدّgrew severe فيناamong us الكربُdistress غبّafter فجاءِsudden calamity
إِذا اِشتَدّ فينا الكربُ غبّ فجاءِ
For us, by God, you are a support and a refuge
When distress grows severe among us after sudden calamity.
دَهَتناstruck us الخُطوبtroubles المُدلَهِمّاتُdark and overwhelming جُملةًall at once
دَهَتنا الخُطوب المُدلَهِمّاتُ جُملةً
وَفاجَأَناand surprised us مِنهاfrom them هُجومthe onrush البلاءِof affliction
وَفاجَأَنا مِنها هُجوم البلاءِ
Dark troubles have struck us all at once,
And an onrush of affliction has taken us by surprise.
وَأَنتَand you لَناfor us غَوثٌaid وَحِصنٌand a fortress وَملجأand a shelter
وَأَنتَ لَنا غَوثٌ وَحِصنٌ وَملجأ
إِلَيكَto you لَناfor us وَاللَّهby God حسنhopeful اِلتجاءِappeal
إِلَيكَ لَنا وَاللَّه حسن اِلتجاءِ
For us you are aid, a fortress, and a shelter;
To you, by God, we make our hopeful appeal.
سِواكَbesides you بِهِthrough him يُستشفعُis intercession sought اليومَtoday أَوor غداtomorrow
سِواكَ بِهِ يُستشفعُ اليومَ أَو غدا
وَأَنتَand you شَفيعan intercessor أَكرمُnoblest الشّفعاءِof intercessors
وَأَنتَ شَفيع أَكرمُ الشّفعاءِ
Who besides you is sought as an intercessor today or tomorrow?
You are an intercessor, the noblest of intercessors.
وَإِنّكand indeed you بَحرٌa sea لِلشّفاعَةِof intercession واسعٌvast
وَإِنّك بَحرٌ لِلشّفاعَةِ واسعٌ
بَعيدfar-reaching المَدىin extent حقّاًtruly بِدونِwithout اِنتِهاءِend
بَعيد المَدى حقّاً بِدونِ اِنتِهاءِ
You are a vast sea of intercession,
Truly stretching far, without end.
وَبَعْدَكَand after you ياO مَولايَmy master فيهاwithin it جَداولare streams
وَبَعْدَكَ يا مَولايَ فيها جَداول
بِيومِon the Day of الجَزاRecompense وَالحشرِand the Gathering كَالأولياءِlike the saints
بِيومِ الجَزا وَالحشرِ كَالأولياءِ
After you, my master, there are streams of it
On the Day of Recompense and Gathering, such as the saints.
وَمَنand whoever يردِapproaches البحرَthe sea العَظيمَmighty عَلىwhile ظَماthirsty
وَمَن يردِ البحرَ العَظيمَ عَلى ظَما
ويَرجعand returns ياO حاشاfar be it بِدونِwithout اِرتِواءِdrinking his fill
ويَرجع يا حاشا بِدونِ اِرتِواءِ
Who would come thirsty to the mighty sea
And return, far be it, without having drunk his fill?
تَشفّعintercede رَسولَMessenger of اللَّهGod فيناfor us فَإِنّناfor indeed we
تَشفّع رَسولَ اللَّه فينا فَإِنّنا
كَسَتناclothed us يَدُthe hand of العِصيانِdisobedience ثَوبَin a garment of العياءِexhaustion
كَسَتنا يَدُ العِصيانِ ثَوبَ العياءِ
Intercede for us, Messenger of God, for
The hand of disobedience has clothed us in the garment of exhaustion.
وَأَثقَلَناand weighed us down حَملُthe burden of الذّنوبِsins كَواهلاon our shoulders
وَأَثقَلَنا حَملُ الذّنوبِ كَواهلا
وَصِرناand we became بِهاthrough them أَسرىcaptives بِقيدِin the shackles of العناءِhardship
وَصِرنا بِها أَسرى بِقيدِ العناءِ
The burden of sins has weighed down our shoulders,
And through them we have become captives in the shackles of hardship.
وفيand at بابِكَyour door العاليlofty حَطَطناwe set down رِحالَناour baggage
وفي بابِكَ العالي حَطَطنا رِحالَنا
نُقدّمwe offer ياO مَولايَmy master حسنَhopeful الرّجاءِexpectation
نُقدّم يا مَولايَ حسنَ الرّجاءِ
At your lofty door we have set down our baggage,
Offering, my master, our hopeful expectation.
وَلَيسَand it is not بِمَردودturned away وَإِنّكand indeed you سيّديmy master
وَلَيسَ بِمَردود وَإِنّك سيّدي
لَفيsurely among الخلقِcreation طرّاًall أَكرمmost generous الكُرَماءِof the generous
لَفي الخلقِ طرّاً أَكرم الكُرَماءِ
It will not be turned away, for you, my master,
Are surely the most generous of all creation.
عَلَيكَupon you صَلاةُblessings of اللَّهGod ثمَّthen سَلامهُHis peace
عَلَيكَ صَلاةُ اللَّه ثمَّ سَلامهُ
بِكلِّevery صَباحٍmorning بَلindeed وكلِّand every مساءِevening
بِكلِّ صَباحٍ بَل وكلِّ مساءِ
May God's blessings and then His peace be upon you
Every morning and every evening,
مَدىthroughout الدّهرِtime ماwhenever شَمسُthe sun of النّهارِday لَقَدindeed بَدَتappears
مَدى الدّهرِ ما شَمسُ النّهارِ لَقَد بَدَت
وَأَلبَستand clothes الآفاقَthe horizons ثَوبَin a garment of الضياءِlight
وَأَلبَست الآفاقَ ثَوبَ الضياءِ
For all time, whenever the daytime sun appears
And clothes the horizons in a garment of light.
وماand whatever الفَتحُal-Fath ياO مَولايَmy master أَبدىhas expressed بِمَدحِهِin his praise
وما الفَتحُ يا مَولايَ أَبدى بِمَدحِهِ
عَلَيكَof you أَجَلَّmost exalted الرّسلِof the messengers حسنfair الثّناءِacclaim
عَلَيكَ أَجَلَّ الرّسلِ حسن الثّناءِ
Whatever al-Fath, my master, has expressed in his praise
Of you, most exalted of messengers, with fair acclaim,
وَناداكَand he calls to you فيat كلِّevery الأَحايينmoment قائلاًsaying
وَناداكَ في كلِّ الأَحايين قائلاً
أَلاlo ياO أَجلَّmost exalted الرّسلِof the messengers وَالأَنبياءِand the prophets
أَلا يا أَجلَّ الرّسلِ وَالأَنبياءِ
He calls to you at every moment, saying:
O most exalted of messengers and prophets!
