O mistress of the gaze, from whose arrows
O mistress of the glanced eye, whose arrows
My heart melts, and then the arrowheads remain;
Melt my heart, though the wounds remain
وياand O رَبَّةَmistress of الثَّغرِthe mouth الشّهيِّsweet كَلامهits speech
وَمِنهُand from it عَلَيناto us قَدindeed تَدورُcirculates شَمولُwine
And O mistress of the mouth whose speech is sweet,
O mistress of the enticing lips, her speech
And from it wine indeed comes round to us;
Envelops us in tenderness and charm
وَياand O مُهجَةَlifeblood of الأَرواحِthe souls رَيحانَةsweet basil of الحَشاthe bosom

And O lifeblood of souls, sweet basil of the bosom,
O solace of souls, garden of delight
And pupil of beauty's eye, which is lined with kohl;
Humankind’s beauty, kohl-lined eyes beguile
وَياand O خوطَslender branch of بانِthe bān tree of الحُسنِbeauty رَنَّحهُmade it sway الصَّباthe east wind

And O slender branch of beauty's bān tree, swayed by the east wind,
O finely arched brows, caressed by morning breeze
And O you who assail with an oryx's eyes;
O lightning flashes of coquetry and smile
عَلَيهاaround her قُلوبُthe hearts of العاشِقينthe lovers حَوائِمٌhovering

Around her the lovers' hearts hover,
Upon her visage lovers' hearts do circle
They circle around her, intent on alighting.
Hovering, besotted by her style
لِماذاwhy حَياةَlife of الرّوحِthe soul عَنكِfrom you طَردتِنيyou banished me
وَمِلتِand you turned لِغَيريtoward someone other than me وَهوَwhile he عنكِfrom you يَحولُturns away
Why, O life of the soul, did you drive me from you,
Why from your life have you shut me out
And turn to another, while he turns away from you?
Preferring others, though our bond is true?
وَإِنّيand I am أَخوa possessor of عِشقٍlove عَديمlacking وجودِهِits existence
وَلَيسَand there is no لَهُfor it فيamong العاشِقينَthe lovers مَثيلُequal
And I possess a love found nowhere else,
Among lovers I'm most ardent, ceaselessly devoted
And it has no equal among lovers.
None can equal me in loving you
وَماand not كلُّevery مَنone who قَدindeed يَدَّعيclaims العشقَlove مُغرَمٌlove-stricken
وَماand not كُلُّevery خِلٍّfriend فيamong الأَنامِmankind خَليلُan intimate friend
And not everyone who claims love is love-stricken,
Not all who claim to love are really smitten
And not every friend among mankind is an intimate friend.
Nor is each companion a friend so true
رَجَحتI outweighed أُهيلَthe little band العِشقِof love فيكِfor you صَبابةًin yearning
وَإِنّand indeed غَراميmy passion شاهِدٌa witness وَدَليلُand proof
I have outweighed love's little band in longing for you,
I staked my love on you in reckless youth
And indeed my passion is witness and proof.
My passion still bears witness, as I knew
وَعَيناكِand your two eyes ثمّthen القَلبُthe heart مِنكِof yours وَلَوعَتيand my anguish
And your two eyes, then your heart, and my anguish,
Your eyes and then your heart accused of cruelty
Are trustworthy, upright witnesses, beyond doubt.
Witnesses of truth, upright and just
وَإِنand if كُنتِyou are فيماabout what قُلتهI said it فيin تَرَدُّدٍdoubt
دَعاكِurged you إِلَيهِto it كَالوشاةِlike the slanderers عَذولُa reproacher
And if you are in doubt about what I have said,
If you doubt what I have said, whispers may
Urged to it by a reproacher, like the slanderers,
Have swayed you, though I keep my trust
زَنيweigh القَومُthe people حتّىso that تَعلَميyou may know عِندَwhen وَزنِهمweighing them
إِذاwhen رفعَis raised الميزانُthe balance كَيفَhow أَميلُI tilt
Weigh the people, so that, when weighing them, you may know,
Let people weigh us well, that you may know
When the balance is lifted, how I tip the scales.
Who slides, who firmly holds the scale
