O dwelling of Zaynab at al-Aqiq, smile,

From joy's mouth, and speak at al-Udhayb.

A dwelling for a beauty whose face is like the sun,

While lightning flashes through her smile.

A graceful daughter of lions, roaming freely in the wilderness,

She is the gazelle in its sheltered covert.

She is enamored of hunting, herself uncaught,

And her quarry is the heart of the mighty, fierce lion.

Of every resolute warrior who has donned a keen sword,

Of every wielder of a dusky, keen-tipped spear,

Of every lion charging into battle's horror,

Who yearns for death and seeks no shelter from it.

He gives and takes blows in battle, standing firm,

And returns not destroyed, but a destroyer.

He gallops on a purebred, splendid steed,

Like the breeze, though it has not been bridled.

On it he charges, roaring like a lion,

Yet if he swoops, he is like a young eagle.

If he plunged into the enemy ranks, you would see him

On his charger, having trampled over a bear cub.

I loved her—bright-eyed, a slender bough of the ban tree,

A sun shining forth, so her night has not darkened.

Kohl-eyed, a mole appears upon her cheek,

Adding beauty to it, as a bracelet does to a wrist.

That mole turned from her blood into ambergris,

Then blackened, having been like crimson dye.

And musk is part of the gazelle's blood; but only

In musk is a quality not found in blood.

    أَصبَحت فيهِ بِذي الغَرامِ الأَهيمِ

    O Zayn, I am enthralled by love for you;

Through it I have become a lover crazed with passion.

I crossed the desert wastes, knowing no destination,

Wandering lost: such is the state of the passion-stricken lover.

You burned my heart with separation, O my paradise,

And settled within it, though it is like Hell.

Have you not felt its fire and blaze,

And then favored it with tenderness and compassion?

She said, "Yes; I found its bitter torment sweet,

As the gazelle finds the taste of colocynth sweet."

O Zayn, is there nearness and a meeting for the love-stricken?

For his separation is the very essence of painful torment.

Separation is not a binding obligation upon you,

Nor has union with me been forbidden to you.

Have you heard the reproachers' words and their rebukes?

O Zayn, wretched words are the words of those who blame!

Alas for my heart—passion has melted it!

So I wept for it, tears flowing like crimson dye.

How can I escape love? What recourse have I,

When its taste is sweet, delicious to savor?

And indeed, I was fashioned for love and grew accustomed to it,

And changing habits is not to be taken for granted.

And by nature I am accustomed to praising the most generous nobleman,

And the most exalted gallant, grandest among the noble.

Lion of the den, and cub of the mighty lion of battle,

Feller of lions—and such is the fierce lion's way.

Fully armed, powerfully built, pressing forward,

His claws in battle remain untrimmed.

A hero whom, when he mounts his charger, you see

As a lion upon a lofty, towering mountain.

Thus his weapons and the neighing of the steed beneath him

Are lightning and thunder in the dark, swirling dust.

    لَولاهُ كانَ الجاهُ غير مقوَّمِ

    Endowed with prestige—rather, he is its very prestige and mainstay;

Without him, prestige would have no support.

Lord of glory and eminence, who has excelled in

Noble faithfulness and might beyond the likes of Muhallam.

An ocean of noble virtues and bounty; not even Hatim

Can match him in generosity or munificence.

    Bright-faced, veiled in cheerfulness

And shining handsomeness, his mouth ever smiling.

    Peerless, perceptive, virtuous, cultivated,

    Magnificent, distinguished, perfect, and honored.

The Quss of eloquence—how often I see its Sahban

Appear beside him a stammerer, mute.

O possessor of high honors, noble virtues, and piety,

And brother of glories, of the noblest presence,

Indeed, I am a man offering you a bashful maiden,

    A virgin, slender-waisted, with a smiling mouth,

A lovely maiden, adorning her ear with jewels,

And its like has not been strung for her equal.

And she has donned the loveliest necklaces at her throat,

Of pearls, each strung in order like pearly beads.
