حَتّامَ عاذِلَتي في الحبِّ تلحيني
O dove of the grove, in song and melody,
The dove in the doum-palm tree sings melodiously
How long, my reproacher, will you reproach me for love?
While my blaming beloved chides me in love
وَكَيفَand how أَحمِلُI bear مِنهاfrom her العَذْلَreproach ياO أَلَميmy anguish

وَالعَذلُ نارٌ بِها في القَلبِ تَكويني
And how can I bear her reproach—O my anguish!
How can I bear her blame, O my anguish!
And reproach is a fire with which she sears me in the heart.
Blame is a fire burning me inside

فَصِرْتُ عاشِقَها مِن قَبلِ تَكويني
I became enamored of a beauty before passion and love,
I was infatuated before love and passion
And became her lover before my own creation.
So I became her lover before my creation
عَشِقتُهاI loved her قَبلَbefore تَكوينٍthe fashioning لِصورَتِهاof her form

I loved her before her form was fashioned,
I loved her before her image was created
When Adam was between water and clay.
When Adam was between water and clay

None but the gardens of eternity were her birthplace;
She is none but the gardens of eternity where she was born
Do you not see she appeared among their wide-eyed houris?
Can't you see she appeared from among its maidens

I strayed from sound judgment through the light of her face,
I lost my sanity from the light of her rising
And the light in her was guiding me toward shade.
And for me there was light in her that guided me

Slender-waisted, like a swaying shoot upon a bough,
She sways gently like a supple branch
She sways gently to teach the boughs.
To teach love to those pining

Indeed, Qays was one of the madmen,
Indeed those crazed were but one, Qays
And in love I am all the madmen.
And in love I am all the crazed

حَتّى دَعَتني لِفَخري أَنتَ مَجنوني
I cast off the fetter of my modesty when she appeared,
I cast off the shackle of my shyness when she appeared
Until, to my pride, she called me: 'You are my madman.'
Until she called me boasting, “You are my crazed one”

And for her I sold the life of my soul for a price
I sold the life of my soul for a paltry price
Paltry—yet in my sale I was not cheated.
So I was not cheated in my sale

She has indeed shunned me with a harshness without cause;
She shunned me for no reason
What do you see, then, in abandoning a wretched man?
What do you think of the abandonment of a wretch?
لَعلّهاperhaps she قَدalready رَأَتshe saw ذَبحَthe slaughter الكئيبِof the sorrowful man بِهِthrough it

Perhaps she saw in it the slaughter of the sorrowful man,
Perhaps she saw the slaughter of the anguished by it
For estrangement slaughters without a knife.
Where shunning slaughters without a knife

You seized a lovesick man's mind, with which you had toyed,
You possessed the mind of a youth in whom you toyed
And lodged his heart in the fire of Sijjin.
And placed his heart in the hellfires of passion

And for her he was a man of yearning, lost in love's bewilderment,
In her was a brother to fervor in infatuation
When she addressed him with the letters kaf and nun.
When she addressed him with the prefix Ka and Nun

You have seared the heart of a sorrowful man enthralled by you.
Tormented the heart of a wretched enthralled one

And you are a spreading tree of kindness; when you bend,
You are a doum-palm of kindness, if you show sympathy
You sway, scattering gentleness and tenderness.
You sway scattering gentleness and tenderness

Indeed you imprisoned the son of Fatḥullah, O my sorrow
In a prison of estrangement where a captive is humbled.
In the prison of abandonment, humiliating the captive

Indeed, battle came to support the faith.

Muhammad, how it follows the Ya Seen chapter
Muhammad—how he recites the verses of Ya Sin?

He who trod the head of might's Pleiades underfoot,
While the noble one did not trample the weak
And this is honor, not the trampling of packhorses.

Jerusalem takes pride in the sanctuary it contains,
As it manifested a pride to Damanhur
Just as pride has arisen through him for Damun.

The central jewel of a necklace, a gemstone of the age,
On her worth, the appraisal of pricing has failed
Whose worth no valuation can adequately assess.

The gnostic, the ascetic, immersed in scrupulous piety,
Purifier of Sufis till purity adorned him
The sun of Truth, of the world, and of the faith.

So transmit the tradition of piety on an authority like his;
Like the obligatory duty that falls short of obligation
You will narrate the tradition of piety from the most trustworthy.
No innovation in falling short of praising his merits
مَدَحتُهI praised him عاجِزاًunable عَنto fulfill فَرضِthe duty مِدحَتِهِof praising him

I praised him, unable to fulfill the duty of praising him,
For the sea, its waves elude enumeration
Like a decrepit old man, unable to perform obligatory or recommended acts.

No wonder I fall short in praising his noble qualities:
None like him has ever been in India or China
For the ocean's waves weary me in the counting.

So accept the cheeks of the lofty, a gift of a wretch
Whose like has existed neither in India nor in China,
She came drugged and victory covers her

From others besides you, so take her unrefused
So accept, companion of eminence, a poor man's gift.

Its beauty is not diminished if unveiled
From anyone but you; take her without obligation.
Submit and be gentle, you will not see in life any worries

And pearls look beautiful when hidden and concealed,
With a contented mind, in gentleness and tenderness
Nor do they lose their beauty when unconcealed.

The dove of the grove in song and melody.
