لَيسَ أَخذي مِن شِعرِ غَيري اِختِلاساً

لَيسَ أَخذي مِن شِعرِ غَيري اِختِلاساً

إِن يَكُن باعي طائِلاً أو قصيرا

إِن يَكُن باعي طائِلاً أو قصيرا

My taking from others' poetry is not theft,

My borrowing of others' poetry is no plagiarism -

Whether my reach be long or short.

Whether their output be prolific or meagre.

إِنّما كُنتُ آخِذاً مستَعيراً

إِنّما كُنتُ آخِذاً مستَعيراً

أحَرامٌ عليّ أَن أَستَعيرا

أحَرامٌ عليّ أَن أَستَعيرا

I was merely taking as a borrower;

I borrow only temporarily, not permanently-

Is it forbidden for me to borrow?

It is incumbent upon me to borrow lawfully.
