رُوحيmy soul الفِداءُthe ransom لبَدْرٍfor a full moon لاحَappeared مُبْتَسِماًsmiling
فيin ثَغرِهِhis mouth الحاليانِthe two sweet things الخَمْرُwine والعَسَلُand honey
My soul is ransom for a full moon that appeared smiling.
My soul is ransom for a full moon that rose smiling,
In his mouth are the two sweet things: wine and honey.
In his sweet mouth is wine and honey.
يَبدوhe appears فَيَجرَحُنيthen wounds me طَوراًat times وَيَقتُلُنيand kills me
مِنfrom ذاتِهِhis person الفاتِكانthe two deadly things البيضُgleaming swords والأسَلُand spears
He appears, and at times I am wounded and slain
He appears and wounds me at times and kills me,
By his person's two deadly weapons: gleaming swords and spears.
With his deadly whiteness and smoothness.
وَيَنْثَنيand he bends مايِساًswaying تيهاًproudly فيَطْعَنُنيthen pierces me
مِنfrom قَدِّهِhis figure الليّنانthe two supple things العَطفُbending وَالميلُand swaying
And he bends, swaying proudly, and then I am pierced
And he bends, staggering, confused, so he pierces me,
By his figure's two supple motions: bending and swaying.
With his soft, supple neck and inclination.
أَبيتُI spend the night سَهرانَawake طولَthe whole of اللّيلِthe night يُقلِقُنيtroubles me
مِنْfrom هَجرِهِhis abandonment المضنِيانِthe two exhausting things الفِكرُthought والأمَلُand hope
I lie awake the whole night, troubled
I stayed up all night, restless, worrying,
By the two exhausting things his abandonment brings: thought and hope.
From his painful estrangement, my thoughts and hopes.
وَأَنْحَلَand emaciated الجِسمَthe body مِنّيof mine عِندَduring جَفوَتِهِhis coldness
مِنfrom ذاتِهhis person المُنْحلانِthe two that cause wasting الخَصرُthe waist والكفَلُand the buttocks
And when he treated me coldly, my body was wasted away
And my body melted away from me by his aloofness,
By his body's two causes of wasting: his waist and buttocks.
From his melting waist and shoulders.
وَلانَand softened ليtoward me حينَwhen أَبكيI weep فيin مَحَبَّتهِlove for him
مِنَfrom الجَفاharshness القاسِيانِthe two hard things الصخْرُrock والجَبَلُand the mountain
And when I weep for love of him, they soften toward me—
He had no mercy on me when I cried from his abandonment,
The two hard things, despite their harshness: rock and mountain.
With his harsh, stony heart and mountainous ego.
وَطابَand became pleasant ليto me بِالهَوىthrough passion وَالحبُّand love يَلعَبُplays بيwith me
فيin عِشقِهِlove for him القاتِلانِthe two killers اللَّومُreproach والعذلُand censure
And through passion, while love plays with me, I have come to relish
And for me, love and passion played with me,
The two killers in my love for him: reproach and censure.
In his deadly blame and reproach.
وَقَدْand indeed حَلاbecame sweet بِنِظاميthrough my versifying الدُّرُّpearls مُنسَبِكاًcast together
فيconcerning حُسْنهِhis beauty الأعْذَبانِthe two sweetest المَدحُpraise والغزَلُand love poetry
And pearls have grown sweet, cast together in my verse—
And prose adorned with rhyme shined through my writings,
Concerning his beauty: the two sweetest things, praise and love poetry.
In his most sweet praise and amorous verse.
فَلاso no وعَينَيْهِby his two eyes لاnot أهْوىI love سِواهُanyone but him ولَوْand even if
أصابَنيafflicted me المُتعِبانthe two wearying things العِيُّinarticulacy والمَلَلُand boredom
No, by his eyes, I love none but him, even if
By his eyes I swear, I love no other but him, even if
The two wearying things afflict me: faltering speech and boredom.
I'm struck by the two troubles, blindness and boredom.
