عَذولِيَmy reproacher دَعleave off عَنكَaway from you لَوميblaming me بِوَجديfor my passion
عَذولِيَ دَع عَنكَ لَومي بِوَجدي
بِمَنfor one who كانَwas لِلشّمسِto the sun مثلاًan equal وَشبهاand a likeness
بِمَن كانَ لِلشّمسِ مثلاً وَشبها
My reproacher, stop blaming me for my passion
My blamer, cease blaming my passion;
For one who was the sun’s equal and likeness.
Who to the sun can liken herself, or equal?
فَماfor ... not بَيَّضَwhitened العَذلُreproach وَجهَface عَذولٍa reproacher
فَما بَيَّضَ العَذلُ وَجهَ عَذولٍ
وَلَكِنbut لَهُfor him سَوّدblackened العَذلُreproach وَجهاa face
وَلَكِن لَهُ سَوّد العَذلُ وَجها
For reproach has never whitened a reproacher’s face,
Blame whitens not the cheek of the blamer,
But reproach has blackened his face.
Rather than his, by blame is a cheek darkened.
