مُذْ ذُقتُه لا أستطيعُ نُهوضا
Magic has an effect that has harmed the wise.
The charm of looks has baneful power on me;
Since I tasted it, I cannot rise.
Since I have tasted it, I cannot rise.

ما كان جفنُ الحِبِّ مِنهُ مَريضا
If the magic of glances were not potent,
Had not the magic of the eyes effectual been,
The beloved's eyelid would not be ailing from it.
The eyelids of love had not been sick with pain.
