In the sorrow-stricken one's heart, the fire of passion blazed;
With the heart burning in grief, the fire of love ignited
So it gave forth smoke that rose from his innermost heart.
Emitting smoke that rose high from its burning
وَإِنّيand indeed I شَرِبتُI smoked التّبغَtobacco قَصداًdeliberately لِيَختَفيso that it might be hidden

And I smoked tobacco deliberately, so that
Though I drank tobacco intentionally to disguise
The smoke rising from my heart might be concealed by its smoke.
The smoke that billowed from my burning heart
