In love, I have made my plantings thrive.
In love, I have tended my saplings,
And in it, separation has indeed robbed me of my senses.
And in it, separation has confused my senses.

O you whose dusky lips surpass wine, the daughter of the cup,
O you whose smoothness surpasses a goblet's daughter!
I swear by your slender, swaying form,
I swear by your tall, straight figure,

And by the roses of your cheek and its myrtle-like down,
And the roses of your cheek, and the languishing gazelles,
And by your brow, which holds beauty and splendor,
And your brow, possessing beauty and splendor,

And by your love, for the enthralled lover has never strayed from it,
And your love - when the yearning complain of it -

And by your beauty, which bewitches those endowed with reason—
And your enchanting beauty, lords of prohibition,
You are nothing but a temptation to humankind.
You are nothing but temptation for people.

Let the reproaching women fault me for my love,
Leave off blaming me, O censurers, for my passion,
And the blaze of yearning melts me in my love for him.
And the youths' ardour melts me with its love.
ياO مَنْyou who بأسهُمِwith the arrows of مُقلتَيْهِhis two eyes يُصيبُنيstrikes me

O you who strike me with the arrows of your eyes,
O you whose harshness strikes my eyelids,
I complain to you of my yearning, and you answer me:
I complain to you of my youth, so answer me!

'Die in love, your breathing stilled.'
Die in love, extinguished of breath.
I am enamored; youthful dalliance has become my art.
I am a lover whom desire has perfected its craft,
وَغدَوتُand I have become مَملوكَthe slave of الحبيبِthe beloved وقِنَّهُand his hereditary slave

And I have become the beloved's slave and bondsman.
And I have become a slave of the beloved and his fidelity.
Do you spurn me, O master of the sovereign and his son,
Do you forbid me, O lord of the kingdom and its prince,
وتقولُand you say أفَلاdid you not, then علمتَyou learned بأَنَّهُthat he

And say, 'Have you not learned that
And say: "Do you not know that
One suffers from loving the sons of kings?'
it is agony to love the sons of kings?"
كَيفَhow الخَلاصُescape مِنَfrom العَذولِthe reproacher وعَذلِهِand his reproach

How can I escape the reproacher and his reproach?
How can I be saved from love's harm and its pain?
Who will show the way to the beloved and union with him?
Who will guide me to the beloved and joining him?
أَفَلاdo you not, then تَرىsee متغرِّباًone living in exile عنaway from أهلِهِhis family
ياO مَنْyou who رضيتُI accepted تغرُّبيmy exile منfor أجلِهِhis sake
Do you not see an exile far from his family,
Do you not see me estranged from my family and people
O you for whose sake I have accepted my exile,
For the one I was content to be estranged for?

So that your hard heart might soften toward me?
So that he might be gentle with me, my tough heart.
The heart is caught between being torn apart and crumbling,
My heart is torn and shattered,
وَالحبّand love لَيسَis not معاملاًdealing ليwith me بالّتيin the [kindest] manner

ياO هاجِريyou who forsake me والهَجرُand separation فيهin it مَنِيَّتيmy death
And love does not deal kindly with me.
And love is not dealing with me kindly.
O you who forsake me—separation holds my death—
O my migrator! And in separation is my demise.
جُدْbe generous بالوِصالِwith reunion فقدfor indeed أطلْتُI have prolonged تشتُّتيmy wandering
وفِراقَand parting from أَوطانيmy homelands وَبُعدَand distance from أُناسيmy people
Grant me reunion, for I have prolonged my wandering,
Be earnest in union, for long have I suffered my fragmentation,
And my parting from my homelands and my distance from my people.
And the separation from my homelands and people.
